Taking to the high seas isn’t what it used to be. While landlubbers have long opted to steer clear of the water, 2026 has seen a rise in entirely new types of accommodation that appeals to a swath of travelers who enjoy five-star getaways. Yacht hotels are among the hottest travel trends of the year, designed to bring the luxury experience to the water. Frequent seafarers aren’t the only ones who are intrigued by the opportunity to live on a luxurious liner, either.

Several luxury hotels have introduced yacht hotels to their respective portfolios. The Ritz-Carlton, Orient Express, and the Four Seasons are just a few of the chains that offer guests a completely reimagined travel experience right on the ocean. Visitors can expect many of the upscale creature comforts that set these world-class properties apart, from elevated suites and swanky restaurants to spas and swimming pools.

A yacht hotel is essentially a floating boutique hotel that fuses impeccable hospitality with state-of-the-art vessels, resulting in a memorable journey that feels far more distinctive. These five-star hotels at sea differ from conventional cruises, which are extremely popular but have some considerable downsides. Yacht hotels are smaller and in a category entirely unto themselves, with carefully curated experiences and a level of personalized service that one doesn’t experience on a traditional cruiseliner. However, they still come with the benefit of discovering entirely new destinations and waking up at a new port every day. For those craving adventure (and money to burn), it’s a sensible alternative to a standard hotel.

Equal parts cruise, private yacht, and elite hotel, a yacht hotel really delivers the best of all worlds without losing sight of the most important factor of all: sheer luxury. That, after all, is what draws people to book five-star stays. The same upscale amenities you might experience at a fancy hotel are par for the course on these vessels.

While many hotels have caught on to this growing trend, the Ritz-Carlton was the first in its category to offer accommodations at sea when Evrima embarked on its maiden voyage in 2022. The entire concept revolved around bringing the best of its land properties to the yacht, with charters traveling everywhere from Europe to the South Pacific. Amenities like roomy suites, Michelin-starred dining, spas, and bespoke service were all part of that initial iteration, and the experience has evolved since then to include new destinations and perks.

Other luxury properties soon followed, including the first class of Four Seasons yachts setting sail in 2026. They’re designed with the same goal of bringing the brand’s renowned top-tier service to the sea. Personal plunge pools, terraces, floor-to-ceiling windows, and spacious walk-in closets are just some of the amenities that travelers can expect to enjoy when they leave port.

How a five-star hotel at sea differs from a cruise

There are so many elements of traditional cruises that can make or break your entire trip. Yacht hotels, by contrast, are made for nothing but pure comfort. Rather than supporting thousands of passengers at a single time, most of them accommodate no more than a few hundred guests. This smaller footprint allows for roomier suites with more prized amenities, along with more specialized services that make the entire experience feel far more personal. With the quieter atmosphere, the journey may also feel more peaceful.

Design is also a vital addition to the five-star-hotel-at-sea experience. While many cruise ships exude a polished vibe, these yachts are meticulously appointed with the types of interiors you might see at the actual land versions of these properties. With contemporary spas and glamorous restaurants worthy of special occasions among their most notable amenities, they feel much more thoughtfully designed than standard cruises.

The other major bonus is the fact that yacht hotels often follow more unique itineraries than larger cruises. Because the boats are smaller, there’s more flexibility to dock at a small island or a chic marina that you may not otherwise have the opportunity to explore on a massive cruise ship. That intimacy lends the entire yacht hotel experience a far more exclusive feel, a key reason it’s likely to only continue to grow in popularity.
