- “Chaos,” by Andres Conde.
NATCHEZ — Conde Contemporary announces Surface & Subtext: The Art of Andrés Conde, a one-man exhibition tracing the artistic journey of Cuban-born painter Andrés Conde. The immersive exhibition opens with a reception on Saturday, Oct. 4, from 6–9 p.m. at the gallery in downtown Natchez.
At first glance, Conde’s works captivate with luminous surfaces and echoes of commercial and pop art traditions. Yet beneath the polish lies a powerful subtext: meditations on displacement, memory, resilience, and defiance. This exhibition presents not only paintings but also ephemera, photographs, and source material, offering visitors a museum-style timeline of Conde’s trajectory from Havana to Madrid, New York, Miami, Chicago and finally Natchez.
Highlights include works from his acclaimed SOCIAL series, a commentary on the cultural losses of post-revolutionary Cuba, and the haunting reworked painting Chaos, which confronts violence, survival, and the unflinching strength of women. Throughout his practice, Conde resists portraying women as victims; instead, his subjects return the viewer’s gaze with candor. In their eyes is a spectrum of emotion—resilience, vulnerability, defiance—expressed openly and without apology.
Surface & Subtext presents both the art and the artifacts of a life lived across continents,” said Stacy Conde, Director of Conde Contemporary. “It traces the evolution of an artist who insists that beauty can confront history, and that painting can witness both chaos and renewal — reminding us that beauty itself can be an act of resistance.”
