Right on the heels of an impressive debut for the recently released Weapons, director Zach Cregger dropped a tidbit that left DCU fans doing a double-take. Cregger, who’s one of the surging stars among directors in Hollywood, followed up the 2022 hit Barbarian with Weapons, which earned rave reviews from critics and fans alike.
Right around the release of his latest movie, Cregger told The Hollywood Reporter, via its newsletter, Heat Vision, that he had written a script that’s one of his personal favorites ever, and it’s a potential DC Studios film. The potential movie, “Henchmen,” is apparently a completely unique and standalone film from the DCU.
As exciting as the details were, Cregger recently addressed the topic and cleared the air after speculation began running rampant.
Zach Cregger Says Potential DC Script ‘Getting Blown out of Proportion Online’
Cregger recently joined the Double Toasted podcast, and the topic of the script for Henchmen came up. While he didn’t backtrack any of the details initially revealed, he did address the fact that speculation is “getting blown out of proportion.”
The Weapons director went on to clarify a few of the topics he’s likely seen swirling on social media, including the topic of it being a “Joker and Harley Quinn script,” while also confirming that he hasn’t talked to DC Studios’ co-CEO James Gunn about it, as Culture Crave revealed.
“This is getting blown out of proportion online,” Cregger said.” “…It’s not a Joker and Harley Quinn script…I’ve not talked to James Gunn about it…I have [two other films] in front of me…People have written a lot about it online, and not much of it is true.”
For what it’s worth, Cregger never called it a Joker and Harley Quinn movie, and that wasn’t the initial report, either. He also never mentioned that he spoke to James Gunn about it, which is unsurprising given that either rumor would likely gain traction if it surfaced on social media.
For now, Cregger’s script is just that—a script that he loves, which could potentially become a DC Studios film, nothing more and nothing less. Even with the director clearing the air on the topic, don’t expect the rumors to cool off, especially as he’s set to direct the 2026 film Resident Evil.
