Hilariously ‘rude’ way awards shows tell celebrities to ‘stop talking’

Award shows have a hilarious way of moving along mic hoggers to ensure the tight schedule is adhered to.

A lot of celebrities end up giving extensive monologues on top of thanking dozens of people when accepting a gong, which likely drives event organisers insane.

Some stars also end up launching into tirades about a myriad of subjects while up on stage, such as when Jeremy Clarkson took aim at famous faces at the National Television Awards last year, or when Danny Dyer called out the UK government at the 2025 Brit Awards.

Anything can happen on live TV, but those who put these lavish award shows together obviously intend for things to go off without a hitch, and you really don’t want to f**k with their strict timetable which must be followed.

As these events are broadcast in real time, organisers can’t just march up on stage and haul chatty celebrities off the stage if their speech overruns.

Instead, they have to get creative, such as at the 2024 Grammy Awards, when viewers got to see some of the methods that are used to encourage stars to put a sock in it, stat.

When Atlanta-born singer Victoria Monét picked up the Best New Artist gong, she gave a heartfelt speech about how she had spent 15 years of her life chasing the honour.

“I moved to LA in 2009 and I like to liken myself to a plant, who was planted and you can look at the music industry as soil,” the 36-year-old said.

“It can be looked at as dirty or it can be looked at as a source of nutrients and water. My roots have been growing underneath ground, unseen for so long. I feel like today, I’m sprouting, finally above ground.”

As well as sharing this sweet analogy, Monét also had a lot of people to thank for helping her finally achieve her dream, meaning she ended up exceeding the allotted time limit for her acceptance speech.

In the hopes of subtly slinging her off the stage, huge screens dotted around the venue were lit up with the words ‘please stop’, but she still continued to express her gratitude to those close to her.

So, the Grammy’s then cut right to the chase and instead updated the message to read ‘wrap it up’, according to footage which ended up circulating on social media.

Monét acknowledged that she only had a minute to say what she needed to say, and the Grammys turned the music up while she was still speaking to really hammer home that it was time to finish off her speech.

Naturally, people found this equal parts rude and hilarious.

One said that the ‘please stop’ sign ‘actually killed me’, while another found the moment where the music got louder to be even funnier.

A host of people weren’t as amused though, as many made comments that the ‘Grammys are so unserious’, while some suggested Monét ‘deserved more than a minute’ after putting in so much effort to win the award.

Drake was also accused of having no award show etiquette at the 2019 Grammy Awards, as his microphone ended up being cut off due to his lengthy speech. While accepting the award for Best Rap Song, the Canadian star made an impassioned address about the music industry and his achievements. But suddenly, his mic was cut off and the broadcast suddenly cut to a commercial break. He later shared a response on social media suggesting his words may have been ‘too raw for TV’.
