PHNOM PENH: Cambodia’s first museum dedicated exclusively to modern art is embarking on a major expansion as it prepares for its official grand opening, strengthening efforts to preserve a largely overlooked chapter of the nation’s cultural history and introduce it to both local and international audiences.
After more than a year of quietly welcoming visitors, the SAR – Museum of Cambodian Modern Art – announced on Wednewday (July 22) that it is entering a new phase of development, with additional exhibition galleries, expanded research and acquisition programmes, and preparations for a formal grand opening in Siem Reap.
Located in the historic city best known for the Angkor Archaeological Park, the private museum nots that it is the first institution in the world devoted solely to Cambodian modern art, with a mission to preserve, document and present works spanning from the 1950s to the present day.
While Cambodia’s ancient temples have earned worldwide recognition, the museum argues that the country’s modern artistic heritage has received far less attention, despite surviving decades of war, displacement and reconstruction.
“Cambodia’s artistic story did not end with Angkor, and its contemporary scene did not appear without a history,” Pierre-Andre Romano, curator of the museum, explained.
“SAR exists to remind the world that Cambodian modern artists and works before the Khmer Rouge era connect these worlds, and to make this remarkable forgotten heritage visible in Cambodia and internationally,” he added.
The museum currently displays works by more than 50 Cambodian artists across approximately 700 square metres of two floors. Its collection combines artworks preserved by private collectors, artists and their families, alongside pieces acquired by the museum, creating a chronological record of Cambodian artistic development from the post-independence period through to contemporary practice.
Among the artists represented are pioneering figures whose works were destroyed or dispersed during Cambodia’s decades of conflict, as well as artists who emerged after 1979 and members of the country’s contemporary art scene.
The museum says this approach helps visitors understand the evolution of Cambodian art between the glory of Angkor and today’s creative community.
Under the expansion programme, SAR will enlarge its exhibition areas, develop additional galleries, and improve interpretation materials and visitor facilities, while continuing to identify, document and acquire historically significant artworks in cooperation with artists, families and private collectors.
The museum said the larger space will enable it to display a broader selection of its growing collection, strengthen the historical narrative presented to visitors and host more temporary exhibitions.
Details of major acquisitions and programmes planned for the official grand opening will be announced progressively.
According to the museum, many of the artworks now housed at SAR were repatriated to Cambodia over the past decade by private collectors before becoming part of the institution’s permanent collection.
Although preparations for the grand opening are ongoing, museum officials stressed that the public does not have to wait to experience the collection.
“SAR is open now, offering an intimate and unique encounter with a collection that has never before been assembled in a museum devoted entirely to Cambodian modern art,” noted a statement from the museum.
It added that for international travellers visiting Angkor, the institution offers a different perspective on Cambodia by showcasing its modern cultural identity, while for Cambodian students, artists and researchers it provides a space for memory, discovery and learning.
Founded by Cambodian art enthusiast Hor Chakriya in collaboration with a French art collector who has lived in Cambodia for many years, SAR says its long-term mission is to reconnect past and present generations of Cambodian artists while ensuring the country’s modern artistic heritage is preserved for future generations.
The museum is located on Sivutha Road in central Siem Reap and charges KHR6,000 (US$1.50) for Cambodian citizens and residents and KHR20,000 ($5) for international visitors. Admission is free for Cambodian school and university groups. – The Phnom Penh Post/ANN
