Cruising—especially luxury cruising—has never been more tantalizing. With new ships coming online with a keen eye on design and spaciousness, expeditions reaching into wild coasts beyond the poles, and exclusive access to designer homes and the Monaco Grand Prix, journeying the world on the water just gets more and more desirable. Who needs hotels (unless they’re now launching luxury ships)?

But where to turn first? Check out eight of the biggest trends of luxury cruising for inspiration for 2026 and 2027. Let’s put it this way: Have you booked your solar eclipse cruise yet?

The Highest-End Hotel Brands Are (Really) Here!

From land to sea, some of the world’s most luxe hotel brands are getting into the cruise business—exciting developments for travelers who are loyal to Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons, and Aman experiences, and can take that love onto the sea in thrilling new ways. “These are truly more like a small luxury hotel experience that just happens to be at sea, rather than the traditional luxury cruise experience,” says Rob Clabbers, founder of Q Cruise + Travel, a Virtuoso member agency in Chicago.

Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection was the first to jump in with high-luxe, spacious motor yachts plying itineraries on the Mediterranean and Caribbean seas, in Alaska, Asia, and beyond (see our review of cruising aboard R-C’s Ilma). Now, 2026 sees the arrival of Four Seasons Yachts’ 95-suite ship (with interior style from Prosper Assouline, half of the luxury publishing powerhouse with deep travel roots), with itineraries ranging from the Dalmatian Coast and Aegean Sea to the Riviera coastlines along the Med, and beyond. Also in 2026: Orient Express Sailing Yachts’ Orient Express Corinthian with 54 suites and three attention-grabbing modernist sails will cruise the Med, Caribbean, and across the Atlantic with alluring excursions including an evening on Richard Branson’s Moskito Island, access to the Venice Film Festival, and a ‘70s-themed soirée at Pierre Cardin’s holiday home in Cannes. (Keep an eye on the horizon for the arrival of Aman at Sea’s Amangati, a 47-suite motor yacht, scheduled for 2027.)

    The Luxury of Space

As luxury hotel brands have continued to create larger villas for travelers who love space and privacy, cruise lines are keeping pace. Perhaps the most exciting reveal for 2026 is aboard Seven Seas Prestige, the latest ship from Regent Seven Seas Cruises and home to the largest all-inclusive, ultra-luxury cruise suite ever: the 3,700-square foot Skyview Regent Suite. Prestige—which features 411 spacious luxury suites across eight categories beginning at 440 square feet—will set sail in late 2026 with itineraries in the Caribbean for the winter and then across the Atlantic to Europe in 2027.

Expedition Cruising Moves Beyond the Poles

Luxury cruisers who’ve already done the Arctic and/or Antarctica look to move beyond cold weather destinations, Clabbers says, “so expedition operators are expanding to places like Western Australia’s Kimberley region, Raja Ampat, the coasts of Africa, Galapagos, the Amazon, and the Seychelles.”

Case in point: Ponant Explorations Group, already well established at the poles and beyond, has just unveiled a new brand, Ponant Yachting: three ultra-luxe, ultra-intimate catamarans for even more nimble and private exploration. Spirit of Ponant sails the Seychelles, Le Désirade is available for full private charter, and Spirit of Ponant II will join the fleet in late 2026, taking up to 10 guests through the rich world of French Polynesia. And luxury expedition cruise leader Aqua Expeditions will launch its sixth expedition yacht, the 15-suite Aqua Lares, with immersive itineraries sailing the Indian Ocean’s glorious Seychelles, Aldabra Atoll, Zanzibar, and Tanzania.

On the wild Kimberley coast, Seabourn’s Pursuit will return for its third season, offering eight chances to explore the breathtaking region on its 10-day Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls & Wanjinas. (Each itinerary includes a cultural visit to Ngula Jar Island in Vansittart Bay, Western Australia, hosted by the Wunambal Gaambera Traditional Landowners, who are also the godparents of Pursuit.)

But Colder Expeditions Get Even Cooler

“Still we are seeing more demand for cooler destinations in the northern hemisphere’s summer months,” says Clabbers, “including Iceland, Greenland, Alaska, and Norway.” And for the Antarctica curious but seasick adverse: Silversea is doubling down on its “fly the Drake” program by opening its own hotel in Puerto Williams, Chile, its gateway to fly to King George Island across the notorious Drake passage. “This will make Antarctica a more seamless option for those who are time starved or afraid to get seasick on their way to the seventh continent,” he says.

The Solar Eclipse Steals the Spotlight

Astronomical travel is a thing, and eclipse chasing has never been more luxurious, especially aboard a ship perfectly positioned for snagging totality, no matter where it occurs. In anticipation of the next total eclipse on August 12, 2026, Azamara Cruises is partnering with the Lowell Observatory on two Solar Eclipse Cruises: one along the coasts of Greece, Turkey, and Italy and the other amid the shores of Iceland, Greenland, and Quebec. Oceania Cruises will have four of its ships in position for peak eclipse viewing (including parties!): Marina will be in Iceland for 100% totality; Sirena will be in Lisbon for 94% visibility; and Vista will be in the North and Baltic Seas for 93% (Insignia offers partial totality on its “August Jewels of Ireland and Iceland” cruise). And Cunard’s Queen Victoria, Queen Anne, and Queen Mary 2 will all call on ports timed for eclipse viewing as part of larger itineraries.

Can’t get organized for the 2026 solar eclipse? Atlas Ocean Voyages—experts in intimate, yacht-style expedition sailing—offers a 2027 Solar Eclipse Expedition July 27-August 4, which sets out from Barcelona and makes ports of call in Ibiza, Cartagena, Montril, and Puerto Banús before catching the celestial event at sea on August 2—in the company of resident astronomer Jonathan H. Ward. From there it’s on to Portugal, with a call at Portimão before finishing up in Lisbon.

    Racing to the Top

Taylor Swift may not be touring in 2026, but her world tour was one of the major travel drivers of 2024. Similarly, haute events like Formula 1 are captivating luxury travelers, including cruise brands like Explora Journeys, which launched its first F1 Monaco Grand Prix itinerary in 2025 and is leaning ever more into the curves for 2026. Amid Monaco’s famed, glittering mega yacht-dotted Port Hercule, EXPLORA I will be docked June 3-8 for Monaco Race Weekend Reimagined, just 150 meters from the track, offering exclusive onboard F1 events including meet-and-greets with drivers past and present, a VR race simulator on board, jewelry showcases, not to mention lots of Champagne. (Guests reserving a suite will also be able to opt in to enhancements including race tickets and VIP hospitality access.)

Partnerships Just Keep Getting More Interesting … and Fun

It’s never been more exciting to consider the collaborations emerging in luxury cruising, from exclusive high jewelry and watch boutiques to culinary partnerships. Crystal Cruises, which will launch a series of immersive experiences with ownership Abercrombie & Kent in 2026 and beyond, beginning with a 12-day Mediterranean expedition in 2026 and six cultural voyages in 2027, is also a hotbed of exciting collabs: the first-ever Casino de Monte-Carlo at sea as part of an exclusive partnership with Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer (SBM) and the shipboard Umi Uma, the only dining experience at sea by Michelin-rated chef Nobu (Nobuyuki Matsuhisa), among others.

    River Cruising Continues to Rule

Often considered a gateway experience for first timers, the sleek, smaller ships that cruise the world’s rivers continue to be one of the most exciting and enviable ways to explore on water. Look to the never-more-alluring Mekong River, where Viking is adding a second ship for journeys exclusively along the historic waterway that links Vietnam and Cambodia to Thailand and Laos. Built in 2025, the Viking Tonle will take just 80 guests on its first outings, 15-day immersive cruises from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City (or the reverse), beginning in January 2026. Looking ahead to 2027, Celebrity Cruises will expand from the ocean to the world’s rivers with Celebrity River Cruises, with fall and winter itineraries aboard Celebrity Seeker and Celebrity Compass on the Danube (including Christmas markets) and Rhine rivers (including New Year’s in Amsterdam and Basel).

River cruising is also becoming much more than historic walking tours and Christmas markets. Leading in innovation, Ama Waterways, which has offered immersive golf experiences in Central Europe via its Danube sailings, is adding France to golf lovers’ (and Francophiles’) lists with its new Concierge Golf Program on the Seine as part of its Impressions of the Seine & Paris itinerary aboard AmaDante.
