Turner Prize 2026 opens in North Yorkshire at the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art – The Art Newspaper

The latest Turner Prize exhibition (26 September 2026-29 March 2027), which opened to press yesterday at Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (Mima, part of Teesside University) in northeast England, represents a “fascinating cross-section of the visual arts in Britain today” according to a statement from Alex Farquharson, the director of Tate Britain.

This year’s chosen artists engage with topical concerns such as “ecological thought, human precarity, the geopolitics of oil, and the lived experience of deindustrialisation in the North of England”, Farquharson adds.

The four shortlisted artists are Tanoa Sasraku, Marguerite Humeau, Simeon Barclay and Kira Freije, each nominated for a solo exhibition from the last year.

Plymouth-born Sasraku’s display, entitled Morale Patch, explores the instruments and organisations that facilitate extractivism, the removal of natural resources for export and profit. In a setting designed to feel oppressive—compounded by a strong-smelling rubber floor—paperweights containing crude oil stand on a chequered central display representing water and desert (Watchlist, 2025).

Humeau, who is originally from France but lives in London, creates provocative sculptural compositions from a variety of natural sources such as beeswax, 150-year old walnut, 4,500-year-old yeast and a culture drawn from termite mushrooms.

Farquharson tells The Art Newspaper: “I’m struck by how well installed all of the works are. Each one creates a scene… in each case you enter a working installation or scenario, sometimes filmic or theatrical. What they’re each dealing with is quite different. You always have to bring the human [element] into it. Marguerite’s installation is dealing with natural life and making things small, reminding us that we’ve taken up far too big a space in the natural environment.”

Barclay has transformed his performance piece, The Ruin (2025), into an architectural intervention. His installation at Mima comprises a scaffolding structure bathed in red light while an hour-long recorded spoken word piece explores issues around masculine identity, class and race. The work evokes the construction of the M62 motorway, the west-east trans-Pennine route made between 1957 and 1976. The new road became a gateway to different possibilities and adventures for the Huddersfield-born artist. Stills of Barclay’s childhood, featuring images of household ephemera, also feature.

“It is one of the most radical translations an artist has had to do, from what they were nominated for to what they present in the gallery, and that’s not gratuitous,” says Farquharson, who is also chair of the Turner Prize jury.

Originally from London, Freije has made seemingly fragile sculptures from steel strips with faces, hands and feet cast in aluminium. These skeletal pieces, shown lounging on a settee and grasping their stomach, are interspersed with animal forms in a gallery dominated by mirrored walls pitted with lights. A gentle mist hovers around all of the pieces which are on show in a bespoke gallery space.

“I still think the Turner Prize really matters and I lived through a time where its format was really tested, before and after Covid…Format wise, it’s stood the test of time and as a stress test. The British Art Show [edition 10 launches in Coventry next month] and the prize are the consistently accurate views of the art world,” Farquharson adds.

Some media reports have dubbed Middlesbrough the UK’s “crime capital” after a series of high-profile criminal incidents including the recent deaths of five men and two police officers in a head-on car crash.

In The Observer, the critic Laura Cumming writes: “It would be hard to think of a worse collision of life and art than Middlesbrough and the Turner prize in 2026… perhaps the Turner Prize will help the city back up on its feet, someone murmurs [at the opening].” Farquharson stresses that the Turner Prize is “an incredibly positive thing and Middlesbrough is really deserving of it”.

The selection jury for this year’s prize consists of Sarah Allen, the head of programme at the South London Gallery; Joe Hill, the director of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park; Sook-Kyung Lee, the director of The Whitworth in Manchester, and the Arts Council Collection director, Alona Pardo. The winner will be announced on 10 December during a ceremony at Mima, winning £25,000, while the three runners-up will receive £10,000 each.
