“Right After The Honeymoon, I Started Getting Phone Calls From These Girls”: 17 Messy, MESSY Reasons Celeb Couples Divorced

Usually, celeb couples chalk their divorces up to a very PR-friendly “irreconcilable differences.” Sometimes, however, they say, “To heck with it!” and reveal the stranger-than-a-soap-opera truth.

Here are 17 wild reasons celeb couples ended their marriages:

    1. Pamela Anderson married Kid Rock in 2006, but she dodged the bullet of the century when they divorced a year later after his explosive reaction to her appearance in the Borat movie. In her memoir Love, Pamela, she wrote, “I had rented a small house on Escondido Beach, but it was tiny for the five of us, so Bob [Ritchie, Kid Rock’s real name] found us a more suitable home on Point Dume and bought it. We were about to move in, until the premiere of Borat. The screening at Ron and Kelly Meyer’s house didn’t go well.”

She continued, “Lots of important industry people were there — Steven Spielberg, Rick Rubin, Laird Hamilton, and his wife, Gabby Reece. I didn’t tell Bob I was in the movie, because I wanted to surprise him. I forgot about the part in the film that referenced the ‘sex tape.’ Bob stormed out, calling me a whore and worse. He was embarrassed, and his reaction was not thought through. Laird yelled, ‘Don’t get mad at Superwoman when she busts out her cape!’ After I chased Bob to his car, he peeled out, leaving me there alone. I turned back and apologized, then asked if anyone could give me a ride home. When I walked in, Bob was smashing a photo on the wall. He said he was sick of waking up to a picture of me and David LaChapelle every day. But it wasn’t me and David — it was Marilyn Monroe and Bert Stern. We broke up. I didn’t stay in touch with Bob.”

“But as bad luck had it, I was asked to present an award to Kanye West at MTV’s Video Music Awards. I saw Bob on the red carpet, and he looked at me and said, ‘Look what the cat dragged in.’ Then I saw Tommy [Lee, her first husband]. He entered from another way — kind of sneaking in and taking a seat — and when I slipped past him to sit down, Tommy pulled me onto his lap. He was sitting next to the magician Criss Angel, and I asked Criss if he could make Tommy disappear. Bob saw the whole thing and was fuming from his seat across from us.

After I presented the award to Kanye, Alicia Keys started singing her new single ‘No One,’ and at the lyrics ‘Everything’s gonna be alright,’ Tommy and Bob dove at each other. Fists were flying, and the whole thing ended up on live TV. I walked out, and Alicia didn’t miss a beat, kept on singing. It was a setup. MTV must have been thrilled. I told the press waiting outside that we were bamboozled,” she wrote.

    2. Sophie Turner married Joe Jonas in 2019, but after a major argument on his birthday, they split in 2023. He allegedly filed for divorce without her knowledge. The court documents said, “The breakdown of the parties’ marriage happened very suddenly. The parties had had an argument on August 15, 2023. On or about September 1, 2023, the Father filed a divorce case against the Mother in Florida. On or about September 5, 2023, the Mother found out through the media that the Father had filed for divorce.”

However, Joe's rep denied this, telling TMZ,

However, Joe’s rep denied this, telling TMZ, “After multiple conversations with Sophie, Joe initiated divorce proceedings in Florida, as Florida is the appropriate jurisdiction for the case. Sophie was aware that Joe was going to file for divorce. The Florida Court has already entered an order that restricts both parents from relocating the children. Sophie was served with this order on September 6, 2023, more than two weeks ago.”

But according to sources who spoke to TMZ, Joe allegedly decided to divorce Sophie after catching her on the Ring camera, “saying and/or doing something that made him realize the marriage was over.” Another source, who spoke to US Weekly, alleged that he caught her speaking poorly of him to a friend, adding, “It wasn’t anything more than that, but that was the final straw.”

Joe and Sophie's reps didn't respond to BuzzFeed's request for comment at the time.

    3. Mario Lopez and model/former Miss USA Ali Landry were briefly married in 2004. Only two weeks after they tied the knot in Mexico, Ali ended things amid rumors of his alleged infidelity. They got an annulment. On The Wendy Williams Show, she said that “he swore that it was not true,” but she had a gut feeling he was lying. She went through with the wedding anyway because her family had already booked their tickets to Mexico. She said, “I really should have put the brakes on it at that point, but I was afraid.” She later let her friend tap his phone. She said, “And right after the honeymoon, I started getting phone calls from these girls. I confronted him and he…denied it and never apologized.”

Seven years after the breakup, Mario publicly admitted to cheating on Ali. He told Howard Stern that he “messed around” with another woman during his bachelor party in Mexico. He said, “I had no business of being in that position… It was spring break…everybody was hanging out. That was a situation where I was not mature and man enough.” He said that, when his cousins surprised him with a change of plans from a fishing trip in Cabo to a “whirlwind tour” of the country, he didn’t tell Ali. He was caught on camera with the other woman, and Ali confronted him after her sister showed her the picture.

    He said,

He said, “I was wrong for obviously lying, and I shouldn’t have been in that position… I dealt with all this drama, and then at that point just realize… I finally got the balls to say, ‘Hey, listen, I’m not ready for this, I’m sorry.’ At that point, I was not ready to settle down. I wasn’t man enough to know how to go about handling it.”

The “horrible” situation spurred Ali to make several positive life changes, such as taking more ownership of her modeling career. She told the Unfolding Leadership podcast, “I look back on that situation, which was horrible, and I thank God every single day, because it changed me as a woman. It changed the way…I walk through this world, 100 percent. I am so much better because that happened. I am forever grateful for that.”

    4. Old Hollywood actor Joan Bennett and producer Walter Wanger were married from 1940 to 1965, divorcing several strained years after a scandal that landed Walter in prison! Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini’s affair tanked the 1948 movie Joan of Arc, driving the final nail into Walter’s financial coffin. Over the next few years, he declared bankruptcy, leaving his wife as the main breadwinner. However, in 1951, he became suspicious that she was cheating on him with her agent, Jennings Lang.

Like many a scorned spouse, Walter hired a private investigator to tail Joan and Jennings. When the PI discovered the alleged couple was spending time together in Beverly Hills, New Orleans, and the Caribbean, Walter decided to take matters into his own hands. He found Joan’s green Cadillac parked outside Jennings’s agency, then he drove around, waiting and armed. In Walter Wanger: Hollywood Independent, author Matthew Bernstein wrote, “There was a violent argument between the two men, with Bennett yelling, ‘Get away from here and leave us alone.’ Wanger, she said, was ‘standing there like a man hypnotized.’ Though Lang held up his hands, Wanger was implacable; he fired two shots in Lang’s general direction. One went astray against the car; the other struck Lang in the groin, and he collapsed in agony to the ground.”

    .

Thankfully, the shot didn’t kill Jennings. Walter was arrested on the spot, but he hired a powerful attorney, pleaded temporary insanity, and got off with only a four-month prison sentence. He went on to revitalize his career with films like Riot in Cell Block 11 and, most famously, Cleopatra. Unfortunately, the incident had greater consequences for Joan’s career, which never quite bounced back. What’s more, there was no affair to begin with! Joan and Jennings had been meeting to talk about a new show. She told the LA Times, “But if Walter thinks the relationships between Mr. Lang and myself are romantic or anything but strictly business, he is wrong.”

    5. Eddie Murphy and Tracey Edmonds got married on New Year’s Day in 2008, but they separated a mere two weeks later. A source alleged to E! News, “He was insisting she change her name. It was a huge issue. They were arguing about it before they left for the wedding.”

Their wedding, which was held on a private island off Bora Bora, wasn’t legally binding. In a joint statement, they said, “After much consideration and discussion, we have jointly decided that we will forgo having a legal ceremony as it is not necessary to define our relationship further. While the recent symbolic union in Bora Bora was representative of our deep love, friendship, and respect that we have for one another on a spiritual level, we have decided to remain friends.”

    6. Shania Twain and record producer Mutt Lange were married from 1993 to 2010. They separated in 2008 amidst his affair with her close friend, Marie-Anne Thiébaud (who’d also been the manager of the couple’s Swiss château since the ’90s).

In her 2011 OWN show Why Not? With Shania Twain, the singer said, “I was definitely shocked. Mutt was my partner in every sense. It really hurt. First, I found out my marriage was over. The next day, I found out about the affair. My own friend, who I had confided in, had an affair with my husband. I still can’t get my head around that. I really lost my sense of trust, compassion…honesty, forget that. That’s all gone. That’s dead. I crashed down into what I consider an emotional mess.”

And four years later, she told the New York Post,

And four years later, she told the New York Post, “When that happened, I thought, ‘Forget it, this is more than I can handle — I’m never going to sing again.’ I had to grieve through it… I don’t see [Marie-Anne], ever. I don’t invite that trigger into my life… She’s not my future — she’s my past.”

In an interesting twist of fate, Shania married Marie-Anne’s ex, Frédéric Thiébaud, in 2011. As of 2023, Mutt and Marie-Anne were still together.

    7. Colin Firth was married to activist Livia Giuggioli Firth from 1997 to 2021. However, they split up after she had an affair with a journalist whom they later accused of stalking them — an allegation he denied. In 2018, Colin and Livia released this statement: “A few years ago, Colin and Livia privately made the decision to separate. During that time, Livia briefly became involved with former friend Mr. Brancaccia. The Firths have since reunited. Subsequently, Mr. Brancaccia carried out a frightening campaign of harassment over several months, much of which is documented. For obvious reasons, the Firths have never had any desire to make this matter public. The reporting this week on this case is understood to be the consequence of a leaked court document. This is greatly to be regretted.”

In response, the man she had an affair with, Marco Brancaccia, told People, “The reality is that Livia and I have known each other since we were youths, then in 2015-2016 we had an 11-month love affair. After it ended in June 2016 I never called her again. I did send her two WhatsApp messages, one happy birthday [text message] and an email to Colin, the latter which I truly regret. It was sent out in a moment of frustration, sadness — a terrible moment. In the email to Colin — which now in retrospect I truly regret sending — I informed him of the affair I had with Livia. I would never now send that email. It was a terrible mistake, so much so that I even apologized. But to go from that to being made out to be a stalker is just not right…”

Dave Benett / Dave Benett/Getty Images

“I have no reason to doubt that when she said she loved me and she wanted to be with me, she was being honest. But when it came to actions, and I asked her when she would tell Colin, she abruptly ended the relationship,” he claimed.

In 2018, he and the Firths settled out of court. A joint statement from their lawyers said, “In the best interests of their families, the parties have agreed a private settlement. Therefore, the parties have asked the court for a postponement of the preliminary hearing in order to formalize the agreement. From this point on, this agreement precludes any further public statement by any of the parties about this matter.”

Colin and Livia divorced a year later, with a rep telling People that they “maintain a close friendship and remain united in their love for their children.” Another source told the outlet, “No matter what was decided when they stayed together after her affair, nothing could erase that betrayal. It was time to move on, even though they had a solid family relationship and really wanted to save it. … They love their sons and respect and care for each other, but it was just time. They want to protect their privacy and just move on.”

    8. Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke were married from 1998 to 2005. In 2004, he shut down rumors that he had an affair while he was away filming in Canada, telling 20/20, “Uma and I did not split up over anybody’s infidelity. We had a lot of problems before I ever went to Montreal.” However, he seemed to imply that he couldn’t handle being married to such a successful movie star.

Fred Hayes / WireImage / Via Getty

Fred Hayes / WireImage / Via Getty

He said, “It’s tough. You know, you’d come up with these rules: ‘One person works, the other person doesn’t.’ Well, then somebody’s always out of town. Then I’m living in a hotel room, taking care of my kids, while you’re off on a film set six hours a day doing what you love. Do that for nine months and see what a good mood you’re in. It is very difficult for any couple who are married if both people are very ambitious… And our love got beaten up. I don’t know if it’s just too hard to be married to a woman that wants to be a movie star. I know that she has that right to want that.”

According to ABC News, in court documents from Tom’s lawsuit against Bauer Publishing Company, a lawyer asked him if Katie filed for divorce “to protect Suri from Scientology.” Tom purportedly replied, “Did she say that? That was one of the assertions, yes.”

The lawsuit was over the publisher’s magazines publishing stories claiming he “abandoned” his daughter after the divorce.

Tom said, “‘He chose Scientology over Suri for good.’ ‘Has he chosen Scientology over Suri for good?’ ‘Abandoned by Daddy.’ I mean, come on, that is absolutely disgusting. I tolerate a tremendous amount, and I’m very privileged to be able to have the life that I have, and I believe that. But there is a line that I draw for myself and — and that’s it. And I asked for an apology. I asked for a retraction. They denied it.”

    10. Burt Reynolds and Loni Anderson were married from 1988 to 1994. They broke up over each other’s alleged cheating, but, as if their lives were some kind of soap opera, Burt tried to make Loni take a “truth serum.”

      TPLP / Getty Images

    TPLP / Getty Images

Appearing on Good Morning America: Evening Edition in 1993, he reportedly admitted to cheating on her, but he added, “I caught her cheating on me. And so I just…I made a decision to call it off.” But Burt also said he asked Loni to “take a sodium pentothal test” — which has reportedly been used as a “truth serum” — to reveal who was the first to be unfaithful. He said, “If she wins, I will give her everything I own, including my ranch, my house, a lot of Western art she doesn’t want, and her $13 million she was asking for. If I win, I get Quinton [their son]. That’s all I want.”

    In a statement, Loni replied,

In a statement, Loni replied, “I do not intend to engage in a media war. I have to consider the welfare and best interests of my little boy.”

    11. Renée Zellweger and country singer Kenny Chesney were married for four months in 2005. When she filed for an annulment, she cited a mysterious reason — “fraud.” In a statement, the actor said she wanted to “clarify that the term ‘fraud’ as listed in the documentation is simply legal language and not a reflection of Kenny’s character.” In his own statement, Kenny said, “This is an incredibly sad time. I just hope everyone can respect the privacy that I know Renée has already asked for.”

In a joint statement, the former couple said,

Chris Haston / NBCU Photo Bank / NBCUniversal via Getty Images via Getty Images, Derek Storm / FilmMagic / Via Getty

In a joint statement, the former couple said, “The miscommunication of the objective of their marriage at the start is the only reason for this annulment. Renée and Kenny value and respect each other and are saddened that their different objectives prevent the success of this marriage.”

Kenny also denied speculation that their marriage ended because of his sexual orientation, telling Playboy, “I think people need to live their lives the way they want to, but I’m pretty confident in the fact that I love girls. I’ve got a long line of girls who could testify that I am not gay. In order for us to get an annulment, the legal papers could claim either physical abuse, which wasn’t true, or three or four other things that also weren’t true. The best thing we could put in there was fraud. So I said, ‘All right, do it. Whatever.'”

Then in 2015, he told the outlet,

Rick Diamond / WireImage via Getty, Carvalho / FilmMagic / Via Getty

Then in 2015, he told the outlet, “Nothing positive at all in my life came from it, I can tell you that. I didn’t have any clue as to what true marriage meant. I was so used to committing to one thing — music — and then I had to totally commit to a second thing, marriage. I didn’t know how. It was a scary moment for me. I had never really had any kind of attention from the paparazzi. It went from zero to the complete other end of the spectrum. I’d go to a concert, and there would be helicopters circling, trying to get a picture of me and her together. I thought it would be like that all the time. I just totally panicked. I did the only thing I knew to do: I ran. I pushed her away, in every way possible — to the point where I just didn’t want to be married to her anymore. It’s that simple. I still struggle with it. Was it the right thing to do or not? I still think about her every day. Every day I wonder if she’s okay. I mean, you don’t just fall out of love with somebody.”

In 2016, Renée addressed the rumors that Kenny was gay, telling the Advocate, “I forgot about that. It’s a pretty big thing to forget, isn’t it? That made me sad. It made me sad that somehow people were using that as a way to be cruel and calling someone gay as a pejorative, which has fateful consequences. Of course, there’s the bigger-picture problem of why anyone had to make up a story at all.”

    12. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver were married from 1986 to 2021 (though they separated in 2011). Maria filed for divorce after Arnold finally admitted that her suspicions were correct — he’d had an affair and a secret child with their longtime housekeeper, then he hid it from his family for five or six years!

In 2012, he confirmed this was the reason behind their split, telling 60 Minutes, “[It was] the stupidest thing I’ve done in the whole relationship… I inflicted tremendous pain on Maria and unbelievable pain on the kids.”

In 2023, he told the Hollywood Reporter,

In 2023, he told the Hollywood Reporter, “It was my fuckup. It was my failure.”

    13. In March 2023, Lukas Gage and Chris Appleton publicly confirmed their relationship. Just a few weeks later, they were engaged. And a few weeks after that, they tied the knot at the Little White Chapel in Vegas with Kim Kardashian as their officiant. However, after six months of marriage, Chris filed for divorce.

Lukas later told Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, “I had a manic episode for six months. Those furry jackets… I don’t know what literally went through my head, but we live, and we learn… That’s how I roll. I’m a little impulsive. But that was probably one of the most unhinged things I’ve ever done in my life, and I’ll probably have six other marriages.”

    14. Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher were married from 1955 to 1959, when he left her for her widowed friend. Elizabeth Taylor — who’d been Debbie’s friend since they were teenagers — and her third husband, Mike Todd, had only been married for a year when a plane crash took his life in 1958. Shortly after, she and Eddie began having an affair.

Per Vogue, Debbie’s The Tender Trap costar Frank Sinatra advised her against exchanging vows with Eddie in the first place. She said, “He said, ‘Don’t marry Eddie.’ He said I shouldn’t get married to a singer. ‘We’re not faithful. It’s ridiculous for you to take this on.’ I said, ‘Why? I don’t think that I will listen to you — I really think he’s adorable.’ My mother thought he was adorable.”

Eddie reportedly said, “I divorced Debbie and married Elizabeth the day I finished my run at the Tropicana… It was a typical two-rabbi Jewish ceremony. As usual, Elizabeth was late for her own wedding… We were married under the chuppah, a canopy, and as is traditional, at the end of the ceremony, I stomped on a wineglass.”

    15. However, Eddie Fisher and Elizabeth Taylor didn’t find a happily-ever-after. She famously had an affair with her costar Richard Burton (who was married to Sybil Williams at the time) on the set of 1963’s Cleopatra. She reportedly said, “The first day on the set, he was hungover and very vulnerable, and his hands were shaking. He asked me to hold a coffee cup up to his lips, and I was gone.”

In the BBC documentary Elizabeth Taylor: Rebel Superstar, Elizabeth's son, Christopher Wilding, said,

In the BBC documentary Elizabeth Taylor: Rebel Superstar, Elizabeth’s son, Christopher Wilding, said, “My mother was still married to Eddie Fisher. I think she was unhappy. It wasn’t a normal situation, and at that time, her attitude was, ‘Fuck it. I’m going to do it my way, and if you don’t like it, too bad.'”

Their affair was reportedly “so obvious.” Richard and Sybil divorced in 1963, and Elizabeth and Eddie divorced the following year. The new couple were famously married twice — their first marriage lasted from 1964 to 1974, and their second lasted from 1975 to 1976.

Debbie Reynolds warned Eddie that how you get them is how you lose them! In her 2013 memoir Unsinkable, she wrote, “Elizabeth fell in love with … Richard Burton, and I warned Eddie that she’d kick him out in a year and a half — and that’s exactly what happened, which gave me at least a little comfort… He’s not a strong enough personality for Elizabeth, who preferred her men to be, well, Richard Burton.”

But that’s not the end of the story! Debbie and Elizabeth actually managed to repair their friendship. Debbie reportedly said, “We got on the same boat to go to Europe — the Queen Elizabeth. I sent a note to her, and she sent a note to me in passing, and then we had dinner together. She was married to Richard Burton by then. I had been remarried at that point. And we just said, ‘Let’s call it a day.’ And we got smashed. And we had a great evening and stayed friends since then.”

    16. Alex Kingston and Ralph Fiennes were married from 1993 to 1997. They were together for a decade before tying the knot, but only two years into their marriage, he allegedly left her for Francesca Annis, who played his mom in a theatrical production of Hamlet.

Ralph and Francesca ended their relationship in 2006 amid rumors that he had an alleged affair with a singer. Alex later told the Standard, “I know nothing about it, other than that I’m told they are no longer together. I feel no connection to him or to her now. It’s been so long, I can’t quite believe I was ever married to him.”

    She continued,

Georges De Keerle / Getty Images

She continued, “I actually went to see The Constant Gardener — the first time I have seen him on film since we split up — and I was able to sit through it and really enjoy the movie, just thinking, ‘Oh, there’s a fantastic actor on screen.’ But there was no other reaction whatever. Which is quite a good thing, I guess. I put it down to time. And maybe my second marriage… There are so many actors in Hollywood who go through so many relationships, and are allowed to, that I think he should be left alone to live how he chooses, without being under the glare of the media.”

    17. And finally, in January 2004, Britney Spears flew Jason Alexander (her childhood friend, not George Costanza) to Las Vegas, where they had a spur-of-the-moment wedding. An infamous 55 hours later, the marriage was annulled. According to court documents, she “lacked understanding of her actions, to the extent that she was incapable of agreeing to the marriage.”

On Instagram Live, he reportedly said, “Britney Spears invited me here. She’s my first wife. My only wife.” He was arrested, and Britney and Sam were granted a restraining order against him.
