A major luxury cruise brand confirmed a significant onboard policy shift this week—and longtime guests may not be surprised.

The cruise line revealed it will begin welcoming only adult guests aged 18 and over on all new sailings starting in early 2026, a move toward a more serene, upscale experience at sea. Existing reservations that include minors will still be honored, ensuring a smooth transition for families already booked.

Executives say the change comes after extensive guest research and feedback, which consistently highlighted demand for a calmer atmosphere, unhurried pace and more refined onboard environment.

“Our guests have consistently shared that the tranquil environment aboard our ships is one of the primary reasons they return time and time again,” said Jason Montague, Chief Luxury Officer of Oceania Cruises. “By transitioning to an adults-only experience, we are enhancing the very essence of the Oceania Cruises journey–one defined by sophistication, serenity and discovery.”

The adults-only approach is designed to elevate the overall ambiance while reinforcing the cruise line’s reputation for culinary excellence, immersive itineraries and relaxed luxury.

The cruise line behind the move? Oceania Cruises, a premium brand within the portfolio of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd., known for its destination-focused itineraries and fine-dining reputation.

The move places the luxury brand alongside a growing segment of the cruise industry that caters exclusively to adults. It joins Virgin Voyages, a major cruise line built entirely around an 18+ experience, as well as premium cruise brands such as Viking Ocean Cruises and Viking River Cruises, both of which have long positioned themselves as adults-only offerings focused on enrichment, culture and destination immersion rather than family programming. More recently, Carnivalconfirmed it would be offering more of its SEA, adults-only sailings.

“Adults-only cruising is appealing to a wide range of travelers—and that goes for travelers who don’t have kids, as well as those who do. Adults-only cruise lines are consistently some of the highest-rated among reviewers on Cruise Critic, and the adults-only experience is often the most-praised part of the cruise for those travelers,” Colleen McDaniel, editor-in-chief of Cruise Critic, tells Parade.

“The demand for these cruises continues to rise, which is why we’re seeing continued growth—whether that’s cruise lines dedicated to a strictly adults-only audience, specific ships designated as kid-free or special sailings for those looking to book that experience. Sailing with families is a wonderful part of cruising, but our cruisers tell us sometimes, they’re just looking for a break,” says McDaniel.

As more cruise lines refine who they’re sailing for—not just where they’re sailing—this latest shift signals that adults-only cruising is no longer a niche, but increasingly mainstream.
