The Department of State has renewed a travel warning for the Republic of Maldives, warning potential visitors of ongoing issues of terrorism. On Tuesday, the agency reissued language for a previous Level 2 travel warning for the popular destination located south of India in the Indian Ocean.

A Level 2 warning advises travelers to “exercise increased caution” and is the second least serious warning on the agency’s four-tier scale.

The State Department reissued the warning, advising that there are risks of terrorist attacks and violence in Maldives. Attacks can occur at tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets and shopping malls, and local government facilities. The agency also warns that attacks can occur on remote islands, potentially delaying response times from authorities.

If you do decide to visit Maldives, the State Department advises that you:

  • Monitor local media for breaking news. Be prepared to adjust your plans.
  • Stay aware of your surroundings.
  • Avoid demonstrations and crowds.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to get important updates and alerts from the U.S. embassy or consulate. Enrolling helps the U.S. embassy or consulate contact you or your emergency contact in an emergency.
  • Review the Country Security Report for Maldives.

Maldives is an extremely popular tourist destination visited by more than two million tourists each year. The collection of islands is popular in part due to their stunning beaches and over-the-water villas found at many resorts.
