Art you can experience with your whole body

The other day, I went to the Towada Art Center in Towada City, Aomori Prefecture.
It is very famous as a museum for modern art, so I had been wanting to go there someday.

Got off the Shinkansen at Hachinohe Station and took a rental car to Towada City

The Towada Art Center opened as the core facility of the “Arts Towada Project,” the “Arts Towada Project” which is an initiative by Towada City to place art throughout the town, serving as an open facility that provides new experiences through art.

I want art to be installed in the town

I think this “Arts Towada Project” is amazing.

It is honestly a difficult project to explain in terms of what makes it good or what the cost-effectiveness is, but seeing something that many people cooperated to build based solely on the belief that “it must have benefits that exceed the costs in the long run” makes me feel passionate and want to support it.

There is art by Yayoi Kusama, who recently passed away, in the plaza

I get really excited when I imagine a future where initiatives like this spread and art is installed all over Japan.

It is just too interesting at first glance

The thing I felt most this time is that while the charm of modern art lies in using “what is this, it’s interesting” as a trigger to reveal or shake up our daily senses, physical sensations, and relationships with nature and society, that “what is this, it’s interesting” became “it was seriously too interesting” “it was seriously too interesting”.

A huge ghost in the middle of town

No matter which piece I stood in front of or which exhibition room I entered, I found myself constantly saying, “What is this?”

Reunited with Ron Mueck

I have been to a Ron Mueck exhibition in the past, but there were works installed there that I hadn’t seen before.

You seriously must go

I once went to the Tate Modern in London, which is the best modern art museum in the world, but it was really huge and had so many works on display that my honest impression was “I’m tired”. I’m really sorry.

But the Towada Art Center is a museum of just the right size, and I was able to enjoy viewing the works in a relaxed manner.

The outdoor exhibits are also extensive, so it is really fun on a sunny day.

The rooftop was a nice day.

Thank you for reading.

Please take a look at my previous diary entry as well. I went to an NHK Symphony Orchestra concert.

I also go to art museums to see modern art.
