The Claremont Resort has closed its spa after 25 years, ending a long-running destination for massages, facials and other treatments at the landmark resort in the Berkeley and Oakland hills.
The spa’s final day was Sunday. Its updated FAQ page now says, “The Claremont Resort & Club does not have a spa.”
The resort’s general manager, Edward Roe, said Wednesday that it is evaluating ways to revitalize the space.
“Throughout Claremont’s 111-year history, the Resort has continuously evolved to meet the changing needs and expectations of its guests, members, and the broader community,” Roe said. “Wellness has long been an important part of that evolution, with spa and wellness-related offerings taking various forms and occupying different areas of the property over the decades.”
He added that the resort continues to offer tennis courts, pickleball courts, swimming pools, indoor and outdoor fitness facilities, and locker rooms with steam rooms, saunas and indoor and outdoor whirlpools.
“As we look to the future, we are thoughtfully evaluating opportunities to reimagine the space in a way that builds on the Claremont’s longstanding commitment to wellness and ensures the Resort remains a relevant, welcoming, and engaging destination for guests and members, regardless of the reason for their visit to Berkeley and the East Bay,” Roe said.
He did not announce what will replace the spa or when a decision might be made.
The spa opened in 2001 and occupied more than 20,000 square feet in the basement of the resort’s main building. It included 32 treatment rooms, along with steam rooms, whirlpools and other wet-area amenities, according to the resort.
For years, the spa served hotel guests, club members and visitors seeking day treatments, couples’ services and special-occasion outings. The resort’s website had promoted the facility as part of Claremont’s broader wellness offerings.
Claremont Resort & Club opened in 1915 and is known for its white, castle-like architecture and views of San Francisco Bay. It has changed ownership and management several times in recent years.
Ohana Real Estate Investors acquired the property in 2023 for $163 million. HEI Hotels & Resorts took over management in March 2025.
The resort was also renamed Claremont Resort & Club last year after dropping “Spa” from its name.
“While the Spa most recently operated in its current location for approximately 25 years, wellness has never been confined to a single space at the Claremont,” Roe said.
