Summer in the Aegean is usually associated with turquoise waters, long lunches, winding coastal roads and sunsets that seem to last forever. But this year, there is another way to experience the region: through art. From İzmir to Bodrum and Urla, galleries, cultural spaces and open-air venues are turning the Aegean into an unexpected contemporary art route. The journey is not simply about moving from one destination to another. It is about slowing down, looking closer and allowing art to become part of the summer experience. Because sometimes the best discoveries of a journey are not found on a map. They are found in an exhibition.
First stop: İzmir
The first stop on this artistic journey is Hilltown İzmir, where curator Damla Keseli continues the Art in Town by Hilltown project, an initiative that brings contemporary art into an everyday public environment. Her latest exhibition, “Look at Me Once Again,” presented in collaboration with Martch Art Project, is an invitation to reconsider the act of looking itself. The title is almost a gentle command: Look again. The exhibition revolves around a deceptively simple idea: Do not look away. Never look away. Everything that is real is beautiful. And this is where the exhibition begins to become more than a conventional art display. In an age when images are consumed within seconds and attention is constantly divided, “Look at Me Once Again” asks visitors to do something increasingly radical: stay. Stay with the image. Stay with the feeling. Stay long enough for something to reveal itself. The exhibition suggests that nothing truly reveals itself at first glance. Images need time. They require attention, patience and a willingness to look beyond the obvious.
This approach is central to Keseli’s curatorial language. Rather than placing artworks in isolation, she creates a dialogue between them, allowing different artistic perspectives to converge around ideas of perception, memory, vulnerability and presence.
There is also something particularly interesting about presenting such an exhibition inside a shopping mall. Art is no longer waiting for the audience behind the doors of a traditional museum. It is already part of everyday life. Someone may arrive at Hilltown to shop, meet a friend or have coffee and unexpectedly find themselves standing in front of a work of contemporary art. That encounter matters. Perhaps this is precisely what Art in Town is trying to achieve: removing the invisible barrier between “art spaces” and everyday spaces.
“Look at Me Once Again” reminds us that beauty does not necessarily exist in perfection. Sometimes it is found in a crack, an imperfection, a fragment or an unfinished thought. And perhaps the exhibition’s most powerful suggestion is that art does not always need to show us another world. Sometimes it simply teaches us how to look at our own world differently.
Second stop: Bodrum
From İzmir, the route continues south toward Bodrum, where the relationship between art, architecture and the body takes center stage.
At Muse Contemporary, “The Body After Desire” brings together artists working across painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography and mixed media.
Curated by Taner Yılmaz, the group exhibition approaches the body not simply as a physical form, but as a constantly evolving field shaped by technology, aesthetics, nature and cultural memory.
The exhibition features works by Alea Pınar Du Pre, Bahadır Hızol, Banafsheh Hemmati, Canan Savaş, Crystal Paris, Emin Mete Erdoğan, Gülşen Pazarbaşı, İlamm, Jeff Robb, Jono Toh, Kübra Doğu, Mahmut Aydın, Yasemin Vardarlılar and Zeynep Koçan.
Together, the works question what happens to the body after desire has transformed it.
What remains? What changes? And perhaps most importantly, who gets to define the body in the first place?
The exhibition becomes particularly compelling through its relationship with its setting. Presented within the architecture of Ruins Luxury Resort, the works enter into a dialogue with the surrounding space, creating a conversation between contemporary life, historical layers and the idea of transformation.
Third stop: Bodrum Golf Club
The next stop is not a conventional gallery. And that is precisely what makes it interesting. At Bodrum Golf Club, sculpture leaves the white walls behind and enters the landscape with “Sculpture Journey,” an exhibition bringing together the works of Ayla Turan and Kemal Tufan for the first time within the same selection.
Curated by Aslı Özok, the exhibition features eight works by Turan and three by Tufan, transforming the open-air spaces of the golf club into an evolving sculpture route. Here, nature becomes part of the exhibition. Light changes, shadows move. The landscape shifts throughout the day. And consequently, the artwork changes with it.
This is one of the fundamental differences between experiencing sculpture indoors and encountering it outside. A sculpture in a gallery remains relatively stable. A sculpture in a landscape is never quite the same. Morning light creates one image. The afternoon creates another. At sunset, the work almost becomes something else.
“Sculpture Journey” explores precisely this relationship between sculpture, nature and space, while also reflecting the artists’ long-standing collaborative relationship.
The project is realized in collaboration with İyilik İçin Sanat Derneği and Bodrum Golf Club, with a broader focus on supporting young sculptors and creating sustainable opportunities for sculpture in public and open-air environments.
The exhibition can be visited until Nov. 1, 2026, making it one of the summer-to-autumn art stops worth adding to a Bodrum itinerary.
And there is something wonderfully Aegean about seeing sculpture under the open sky rather than under museum lighting.
Final stop: Urla
The journey continues toward Urla, one of the Aegean’s increasingly vibrant cultural destinations. At Gallery Urla, artist Rafet Utku presents a new body of work exploring the fluid boundary between writing and painting. Here, words are no longer simply words. They become visual material.
Utku treats language not merely as a carrier of meaning, but as a source of rhythm, layering and memory. Words placed across the canvas gradually move away from conventional readability, becoming traces embedded within the texture of the painting. The result is a fascinating space between text and abstraction.
Are we reading? Are we looking? Or are we doing both at the same time? This ambiguity is at the heart of the exhibition. The written word becomes an image, while the image begins to behave like language. Meaning is no longer fixed; it shifts according to the viewer’s attention and associations.
In this sense, Utku’s work continues the central question running through this Aegean art journey: How do we look? The exhibition remains on view at Gallery Urla until Aug. 22, 2026.
