Demand for exclusive properties and experiences is also prompting travellers to plan further ahead

Luxury travel is increasingly moving beyond five-star hotels and exclusive reservations, with ultra-high-net-worth travellers prioritising time, privacy and highly personalised experiences, according to Matthieu Schon, founder of international luxury concierge company Matt Concierge.

With more than a decade of experience across luxury retail, private aviation and hospitality, Schon has seen client expectations evolve. Through Matt Concierge, he organises bespoke journeys for entrepreneurs, executives, families and private groups visiting some of the world’s most exclusive destinations.

“Luxury today isn’t about showing people where you’ve been,” says Schon. “It’s about how effortlessly everything comes together. Clients want to arrive knowing every detail has already been handled, allowing them to focus entirely on enjoying the experience.”

Schon says luxury travel is often misunderstood as simply booking the most expensive accommodation. Instead, clients increasingly value the expertise and behind-the-scenes work required to create a seamless trip.

“What clients are really paying for is judgement, access and execution,” he explains. “The work happens behind the scenes – understanding how someone likes to travel, coordinating suppliers, securing the right room rather than just any room, planning realistic logistics and making sure there are solutions before problems ever arise.”

Demand for exclusive properties and experiences is also prompting travellers to plan further ahead. During peak seasons, major sporting events and periods of high demand for villas and private islands, bookings are increasingly made six to 12 months in advance.

“It’s rarely about finding something expensive,” says Schon. “It’s about securing the exact property, yacht or experience the client wants before availability disappears.”

Privacy has emerged as another defining element of modern luxury travel. Rather than seeking complete anonymity, clients increasingly want greater control over who can access their information, itineraries and personal space.

“Privacy means different things to different people. For some it’s private terminals and discreet transfers, for others it’s simply enjoying dinner or a family holiday without interruption. Ultimately, luxury is removing friction from every part of the journey.”

The trend is also influencing itinerary design, with clients increasingly favouring slower and more flexible holidays over tightly packed schedules. Family time, privacy and meaningful experiences are taking precedence over the number of activities completed.

One example involved a client seeking a private proposal in Paris. Matt Concierge arranged exclusive use of Le Jules Verne inside the Eiffel Tower, allowing the couple to celebrate away from the public.

“It wasn’t about making the proposal more extravagant, it was about making it personal. Those are the moments people remember forever” says Schon.

While Saint-Tropez, Capri, Lake Como and the French Riviera remain popular, Schon says demand is growing for Japan, the Nordics and private safari experiences.

His advice to travellers is straightforward: “Don’t start with the hotel,” he says. “Start with what you want the trip to achieve. Whether it’s celebrating, reconnecting with family, exploring somewhere new or simply switching off, the destination and itinerary should always be built around that. Luxury isn’t about adding more to a holiday – it’s about removing everything that doesn’t improve the experience.” -TradeArabia News Service
