The French art critic, curator and museum director Christian Bernard died on 6 August at the age of 76. His death was announced by Geneva’s Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MAMCO) in an Instagram post on Monday.
MAMCO is at the centre of Bernard’s institutional legacy. He was appointed to develop the concept for the museum in 1991, became its first director when it opened in a former industrial building in Geneva in 1994 and remained at its helm until the end of 2015. Bernard told Le Monde in 2003: “I didn’t open this museum, I created it.”
At MAMCO, Bernard made exhibition-making itself part of the museum’s subject. He codified its approach in 12 principles, the first of which described the museum as an “exposition globale”—a continuous exhibition in which temporary shows and frequently changing presentations of the permanent collection were integrated rather than treated as separate programmes.
Under Bernard, the museum deliberately combined contrasting exhibition spaces and display formats, from a collector-style domestic interior and an unfinished loft-style space to a white cube and artist’s studio. Some rooms were devoted to long-term presentations of individual artists, which the artists themselves could modify over time. Temporary exhibitions and frequently renewed displays of the permanent collection were integrated throughout the museum, whose overall presentation was reconfigured three times a year—part of Bernard’s conception of MAMCO as a permanent work in progress.
In an interview with RSI – Italian-language Swiss Radio and Television, Andrea Bellini, the director of the Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève, who knew Bernard in Geneva, described him as belonging to “that extraordinary group of great museum directors who conceived exhibitions as a form of thought”.
The groundwork for Bernard’s restless, adaptive approach predated his work in Geneva. After helping establish the Regional Contemporary Art Fund (FRAC) Rhône-Alpes, Bernard became the director of Villa Arson in Nice in 1985, remaining there until 1994.
From 2016-2021, Bernard was the artistic director of the Printemps de Septembre contemporary art festival in Toulouse and he later founded the publishing house Walden N.
Bernard also wrote poetry throughout his life and, in June, the Académie française named him the 2026 recipient of its Grand Prix de Poésie for his body of work, bringing wider recognition to a strand of his practice that had long remained less visible than his work in contemporary art.
Bernard’s death comes as MAMCO itself enters a new chapter. Its building in Geneva’s Bâtiment d’art contemporain—Switzerland’s largest contemporary art centre—is undergoing a comprehensive renovation scheduled from 2025 to 2028. During the works, MAMCO is presenting projects off-site in collaboration with partner institutions and at other locations.
A memorial ceremony will be held in Bernard’s honour at the Père-Lachaise crematorium in Paris on 22 August.
