If the chemistry is right between actors, sparks fly onscreen — and sometimes offscreen, too. Here are some costars who actually started dating in real life while working together…

1. Kit Harington and Rose Leslie fell in love while playing enemies-to-lovers Jon Snow and Ygritte on Game of Thrones. “If you’re already attracted to someone, and then they play your love interest in the show, it becomes very easy to fall in love,” Kit said.

The pair are still together after marrying in 2018. They have two kids.

It translated over from the real-life attraction Katie and Joshua had — they dated in real life during the early seasons. Katie described him as her “first love” and “something so incredible and indescribable.” The pair remained “best friends” after they broke up and recently began working together again (and possibly dating, if the rumors/hopes of thousands of fans are correct).

3. Charlie Heaton and Natalia Dyer started dating while filming Stranger Things, in which they played love interests Jonathan and Nancy.

They’re a pretty private couple, but it appears they’re still together.

4. Zendaya and Tom Holland met while filming Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2016, and while it’s unclear exactly when they started dating, they confirmed their relationship publicly in 2021.

They’re still together and there’s plenty of speculation that they’re now married despite no official confirmation. Zendaya did recently describe Tom as “my person.”

5. Another Spider-Man pairing that translated into a real-life love story was Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, who seemingly started dating while filming 2010’s The Amazing Spider-Man.

They were together for several years and broke up in 2015. Both expressed in the years afterwards that there is “still love” between them, and they seem to remain friends.

6. It seems playing Spider-Man is a surefire way to fall in love, because Tobey Maguire also dated his love interest, Kirsten Dunst, while filming 2002’s Spider-Man.

Their relationship was short-lived — they broke up before filming 2004’s Spider-Man 2, but their chemistry onscreen was unaffected.

7. Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck met while filming the mega-flop Gigli. Although J.Lo was married at the time to Cris Judd, she later said that when she met Ben, she felt that “this is it.” She and Cris separated, and within months, Jennifer and Ben were engaged.

“Bennifer,” as they became known, was the subject of an intense amount of media and fan scrutiny that contributed to their breakup in 2004. They got back together years later, in 2021, and finally married in 2022. They broke up once again in 2024 and, as of now, are not together.

8. Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin played star-crossed lovers in iconic K-Drama Crash Landing on You, and fell in love in real life, too.

The pair got married in 2022 and welcomed their first child later that year. In 2025, Hyun Bin said Ye-Jin “gives me strength just by existing.”

9. Humphrey Bogart was already married when he starred in 1943’s To Have and To Have Not with Lauren Bacall, but the pair fell in love and began seeing each other while Humphrey divorced his wife.

Humphrey and Lauren got married in 1945 and starred in another three movies together. They had two kids, and remained together until Humphrey’s death in 1957.

10. Betty and Jughead were one of the most popular ships on Riverdale, and stars Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse dated on and off for years in real life.

Following lots of fan speculation and rumors, the pair confirmed their relationship in 2018. They broke up in 2020 but were still working on the show together, which Lili later said was “really hard for both of us.”

11. Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens were High School Musical sweethearts on and offscreen. They began dating while filming the first movie in 2005, and stayed together throughout the making of the trilogy.

12. Viola Davis and Julius Tennon got together while starring in medical show City of Angels in 1999. Viola later said when she met Julius all she could think was, “He’s good-looking. He’s really good-looking.”

The couple got married in 2003 and are still together. “We’ve had accolades, triumphs, joy, grief, exhaustion and still I feel your grip,” Viola said in an Instagram post celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary in 2023.

13. Dan and Serena were one of the core ships across the entire run of Gossip Girl, and stars Penn Badgley and Blake Lively were together in real life during the early seasons of the show.

14. Like many other teen shows (on this list and beyond), The OC‘s most popular ship, Seth and Summer, spawned iconic real-life celeb couple Adam Brody and Rachel Bilson.

Rachel later shared that it was filming their first kissing scene for Season 1 that made her realize she might have feelings for Adam. They stayed together until nearly the very end of the show, and actually only had one scene left to shoot after their breakup — awkwardly, Seth and Summer’s wedding.

15. Rumors started circulating that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were together before the first Twilight movie even came out, though their relationship wasn’t confirmed until 2010.

16. Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder are another set of costars whose chemistry was so palpable that it not only influenced the endgame of their characters on The Vampire Diaries, but also spilled over into real life.

Nina and Ian were together from 2010 until 2013, but continued to work together after their breakup, even bantering about their relationship when they won Best Chemistry at the People’s Choice Awards in 2014, with Ian kissing a laughing Nina on stage.

17. The vampire craze of the late 2000s and early 2010s was great for the dating lives of many stars, it seems, including Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer, who got together while playing onscreen lovers inTrue Blood.

Stephen was already married but allegedly left his wife for Anna, and the two married in 2010. They have two kids and are still together. “We’re incredibly lucky that we found each other,” Anna said in 2019.

18. Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan had incredible chemistry in the classic dance movie Step Up and fell in love offscreen, too.

19. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor had one of the most famous Hollywood romances of all time. It began when they starred in Cleopatra together in 1963, with both of them leaving their then-spouses for each other. Richard and Elizabeth went on to get married for the first time in 1964.
