14 celebrity couples with surprisingly large age gaps

It is said that love transcends a lot of things: time, space, money, and, of course, age.

Love is not bound by arbitrary human-made markers of the passage of time, and the highly contested “age-gap relationship” is merely representative of that. There are some very high-profile relationships that put the old adage “age is just a number” to the test. From the awe-inspiring 44-year gap between Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger and his fiancée Melanie Hamrick to the 32 years separating actresses and long-time partners Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor, celebrities consistently show us that the length of time one has spent on this earth is no roadblock to finding your soulmate.

Ahead, we take a look at 14 celebrity couples with surprisingly large age gaps that make us believe anything is possible when it comes to romance.

Dick Van Dyke and Arlene Silver

Dick Van Dyke, who is currently 100 years old, shares a 46-year age gap with wife Arlene Silver, but Van Dyke jokes that it works because he’s a bit lacking in the maturity department anyway.

“We thought it might be [a problem] in some regard, to some extent, but it hasn’t really,” Van Dyke explained to PEOPLE in 2025. “I’m infantile to start with. I think I’m about 13, so that’s been a problem and she’s quite mature for her age, so I don’t think we haven’t had any problem with age at all.”

Van Dyke also credits Silver with helping him stay youthful. “She’s responsible for keeping me in the moment,” he said. “She’s kept me happy every day of my life, every day. She’s a joy. She can get me singing or dancing and she carries so much responsibility … I’m just lucky.”

Mick Jagger and Melanie Hamrick

Thirty-nine-year-old dancer and author Melanie Hamrick is engaged to 83-year-old Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, and when The Times asked Hamrick about their age gap in a 2024 profile, she played it cool.

“I don’t think about it,” she said of the age difference between her and Jagger. “Everyone’s going to have their opinion. If you think about others’ opinions, no matter where you are in life, you’re going to have a problem and you’re going to analyse it.”

She continued, “I put the blinders on. Am I happy? Yes. Are the people in my life happy? Yes. Am I hurting anyone? No. OK, they can mind their own business.”

Stephen Fry and Elliott Spencer

When 69-year-old British comedian Stephen Fry met his now-husband, 39-year-old Elliott Spencer, in 2012, he wasn’t sure Spencer would be interested in him. “We met at a friend’s house and I knew pretty much straight away that this was someone I wanted to spend, what I considered, the rest of my life with,” Fry said on The Jonathan Ross Show in 2015 (via PEOPLE) before conceding that “he’s got rather a lot more [life to go than me].”

More than 10 years on, that age gap hasn’t come between them. “There is an age difference and I keep forgetting which way round it is but I think he’s younger than me … but I don’t mind,” Fry quipped on The Jonathan Ross Show.

While speaking at the 2015 BAFTAs, which were hosted by Fry, Spencer said that he pays no mind to other people’s opinions of their age gap. “I don’t care what people think, Stephen is the love of my life, the light of my life,” he said.

Anna Camp and Jade Whipkey

Pitch Perfect star Anna Camp confirmed her relationship with stylist Jade Whipkey in 2025, and their 18-year age gap quickly drew attention online. After Pink News posted about the couple and highlighted their age difference, Camp weighed in on Instagram.

“Thought I’d jump on here since I follow @pinknews and just say I’ve dated men exactly my age and Jade is FAR more mature than any of them,” Camp replied.

“We have more in common than anyone else I’ve ever dated and can literally talk about anything and everything,” she added. “Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I’m wishing everyone well 🙂 Especially this Pride month.”

Dennis Quaid and Laura Savoie

Dennis Quaid told The Guardian in 2019 that the stigma surrounding age-gap relationships “doesn’t really bother” him and wife Laura Savoie. The couple, who have been married since 2020, have a nearly 40-year age gap. “Everyone comes from the perspective of their own life and so I can’t comment on the way they feel; I can’t even get angry,” he said.

“I didn’t go out looking for an age gap or someone really younger than me,” The Substance star clarified. “I met her at a business event and then the relationship developed. You have no control over who you fall in love with. I don’t fall in love easy. But I can’t let what a few people think control all that. I’ve been married three times and this is the final one, I know it is. I feel like I have a real partner in life.”

Cher and Alexander Edwards

The pop star who once sang that she believes in life after love also believes that age is just a number. The 80-year-old forever-diva has been in a relationship with 40-year-old music executive Alexander Edwards since 2022, and she doesn’t care about what anyone has to say about it.

“Whatever,” Cher told Gayle King, in an interview on CBS Mornings in 2025. “They’re not living my life. Nobody knows what goes on between us, but we just have a blast.”

“He just says, ‘You know, you get older, but your spirit is younger,'” Cher explained of what Edwards thinks about their age difference.

And in 2024, Cher was quite blunt about why she doesn’t tend to date men her age these days: “Well, now they’re all dead,” she said during an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show.

Patrick Stewart and Sunny Ozell

Star Trek: The Next Generation star Patrick Stewart may be 86, but that doesn’t get in the way of his relationship with 47-year-old singer Sunny Ozell, whom he married in 2013.

However, things were initially awkward between Stewart and his father-in-law. The reason? Stewart is five years older than him. Now, “He rings me up and says, ‘Hey son, it’s your father here,'” Stewart told The Daily Mail in 2015, in a joint interview with Ozell.

Ultimately, the couple says their age gap barely registers. “He is so youthful and I guess I’m kind of an old worry wart so we bridge the gap,” Ozell explained. “It doesn’t come up much. He’s in better shape than me, which infuriates me.”

Maxwell Caulfield and Juliet Mills

Grease 2 star Maxwell Caulfield has been married to Juliet Mills since 1980, after meeting while costarring in a stage production of The Elephant Man. The couple have an 18-year age gap — with Caulfield being Mills’ junior — something that “didn’t occur to” Caulfield at the time.

“It didn’t occur to me, and Juliet maintains to this day it didn’t really occur to her, either,” he told Steve Kmetko on a July 2026 episode of his Still Here Hollywood podcast.

“We didn’t think about it. We didn’t talk about it, either,” Mills added. “It was just two people who just communicated on such a high level, in different ways. We had so much in common because we were both English, to start with, we’re both actors, and we just had a communication instantly.”

David Foster and Katharine McPhee

“I was very concerned with what people would think,” former American Idol star Katharine McPhee said on the Informed Pregnancy Podcast in 2021, while discussing her relationship with record producer and composer David Foster. McPhee, 42, and Foster, 76, have been married since 2019.

“I totally get the judgment initially, but things are never as they appear,” the Smash star continued. “Things are never exactly as they appear. And I’m in love with our love story, and that’s all that matters.”

In June 2026, Foster’s daughter Sara spoke out in defense of her stepmother, who is three years her junior. “She’s really amazing. I have to tell you, she really is,” the 90210 star said on Kristin Cavallari’s Let’s Be Honest podcast. “It’s not easy coming into this family. And they’ve gotten so much s—.”

“Everyone has an opinion about something,” she said. “And you know what? They’re like 12 years in, and they are happy.”

Josh Duhamel and Audra Mari

Josh Duhamel opened up on The HoneyDew With Ryan Sickler podcast about when he realized he was “officially too old” for his wife, Audra Mari. The two have a 21-year age gap: Duhamel is 53, while Mari is 32.

Duhamel’s realization came when he recognized that the age gap is the same as the one between him and his younger sister, Kassidy. “Kassidy came along … and I was playing football at Minot State University. Go Beavers! Warming up on the sideline,” he recalled. “And I remember looking up at the stands, and I see my mom and [she] has this bump. And I’m like, ‘What the— Is my mom pregnant?’ … I was 21 years old … and she’s having another baby. And I was like, ‘Oh my God, you gotta be kidding me!’ So, now we love it.”

While looking at a photo of his sister when she was a “little bitty infant,” it dawned on him: “I looked at the photo, and I looked at my wife, and I said, ‘You know, you and Kassidy are exactly the same age.'”

“Is that a highlight or a lowlight? I’m not sure,” he added, before recalling that he told Mari, “‘Ooof, I am officially too old for you’ … They’re literally like months apart in age. I never looked at it like that until I saw that photo. I was like, ‘Wait a second.'”

Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor

The Ryan Murphy regular has been dating Two and a Half Men star Holland Taylor since 2015, and the pair are still going strong — though fans have had opinions on their age gap.

When Taylor spoke to Andy Cohen on his SiriusXM radio show Andy Cohen Live in 2024, she noted that the couple’s more than 30-year age difference — Paulson is 51, Taylor is 83 — has bothered her more than Paulson, saying it “worries me for her sake.” Still, it doesn’t dampen their connection. “We have a wonderful resonance,” Taylor said. “We’re very interested in the same kinds of things, though we share big differences… I mean, what can I do?”

For Paulson’s part, she feels their age difference makes their relationship even richer. “I think there’s a greater appreciation of time and what you have together and what’s important, and it can make the little things seem very small,” she told The New York Times in 2016. “It puts a kind of sharp light mixed with a sort of diffused light on something. I can’t say it any other way than there’s a poignancy to it, and a heightened sense of time and the value of time.”

Richard Gere and Alejandra Silva

Richard Gere and wife Alejandra Silva have a 33-year age gap, but Silva says it barely registers in their relationship.

“I noticed a special connection, but at first I preferred to remain friends,” Silva told El País in 2025. “Little by little, I realized how complementary we were, how good we were together. But we did everything carefully and slowly, step by step. We waited to live together, to have children [they have two together, Alexander and James, aged six and five].”

“Everything has been very intense but at the same time very calm and natural,” she continued. “I honestly don’t even notice the age difference. He has much more energy than I do.”

Dane Cook and Kelsi Taylor

Comedian Dane Cook and wife Kelsi Taylor are 54 and 27, respectively, and while their 26-year age gap certainly raised some eyebrows back in 2018, when he was 46 and she was 19, Cook insisted that it was never an issue.

Cook did an Instagram story Q&A at the time, during which fans asked questions about their relationship. When a fan asked, “What advice do you have to those in age gap relationships?” Cook replied, “The only thing you have to do is plan that your deaths will be somewhat far apart.”

Cook also said their families approved of the relationship. “I love her family and we are pretty close and do dinner and hang,” Cook explained. “My family pretty much all died years ago but @courtneycook my sister like Kelsi a lot.”

Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Sam Taylor-Johnson

Director Sam Taylor-Johnson has been married to Nosferatu star Aaron Taylor-Johnson since 2012, after the pair met while she was directing him in her feature debut, Nowhere Boy. Since then, the couple have welcomed two daughters, and their bond remains strong.

“I don’t really analyze our relationship,” Aaron told Mr. Porter in March 2017 (via PEOPLE). “I just know that it works. I just feel secure and loved and safe. We have this very deep connection. We’re just in sync.”

Meanwhile, Sam told the Sunday Times that same year that her husband has “an old soul,” saying, “We spend every minute of the day together. My friends call him Benjamin Button because he has — on the outside — such youth, and on the inside, he is so wise and settled. He doesn’t like parties. He likes being at home and cooking for the family. He likes walking the dogs. He loves his chickens — he collects the eggs and makes breakfast for everyone.”
