We’ve all had the experience when you find out that someone — either a friend or a celebrity who feels like a friend — breaks up with their partner, and in the back of your mind, you’re like, I knew it. Sometimes the vibes are just off!
But in plenty of other cases, it’s the opposite. There is absolutely no warning. No quiet deletion of Instagram posts, no subtle complaints, no missing ring — just a big breakup that catches us all off guard.
So, off the back of Nina Dobrev and Shaun White’s genuinely shocking split this month, here’s a list of other celebrity breakups that seemed like they came out of nowhere — along with some that I definitely saw coming.
1. DIDN’T SEE IT COMING: Nina Dobrev & Shaun White (2019-2025)

I’m very much still processing this one. On Aug. 31, the couple were seen looking all loved up in LA, and within less than three weeks, we had a report from People saying they’d called off their engagement. What happened?!
2. KNEW IT: Gisele Bündchen & Tom Brady (2006-2022)

Gisele and Tom’s divorce announcement in October 2022 came after months of widespread speculation that there were issues in their marriage, allegedly caused by Tom’s decision to unretire from the NFL. Five months before the split went public, Gisele also gave some interesting comments to British Vogue about how much “work” it takes to be “in sync” with a partner after having kids — and if this list goes to show anything, it’s that comments about “work” and tricky relationship dynamics usually aren’t a good sign for what’s to come.
3. DIDN’T SEE IT COMING: Sophie Turner & Joe Jonas (2016-2023)

2023 was a big year for celebrity breakups, and it’s fair to say that Sophie and Joe’s may have been the biggest shock of them all. Sophie and Joe had welcomed their second child together a year earlier, and in the weeks before the divorce news broke, they’d been interacting on social media like nothing was wrong. The breakup was MESSY, but these two seem all good now.
4. KNEW IT: Jennifer Garner & Ben Affleck (2004-2015)

Whenever I think about inevitable celebrity divorces, Ben Affleck’s second Oscar acceptance speech in March 2013 (unfortunately) comes to mind. While attempting to thank Jennifer, Ben fumbled his way through the following words about their relationship: “I wanna thank my wife… I wanna thank you for working on our marriage for 10 Christmases. Uh, it’s good. It is work. But it’s the best kind of work. And there’s no one I’d rather work with.” It’s truly one of the most awkward things I’ve ever seen. They announced their separation two years later.
5. DIDN’T SEE IT COMING: Joshua Jackson & Jodie Turner-Smith (2018-2024)

Jodie filed for divorce from Joshua in October 2024, and in the legal docs, she listed the date of separation as Sept. 13 — which was just ONE DAY after they’d been photographed holding hands and smiling at an event in NYC. And if we were shocked, it sounds like Joshua was, too, with reports at the time claiming he was “caught off guard” by Jodie’s divorce filing.
6. KNEW IT: Katy Perry & Orlando Bloom (2016-2025)

In 2023, Orlando made some very intriguing comments about Katy and how existing in “two very different pools” made things difficult in their relationship. “Sometimes things are really, really, really challenging. I won’t lie,” he told Flaunt magazine. IMO, that was a little weird, and I remember thinking it at the time. And here we are!
7. DIDN’T SEE IT COMING: Channing Tatum & Zoë Kravitz (2021-2024)

In October 2024, everyone was gushing over Channing and Zoë’s incredible chemistry as they promoted Zoë’s directorial debut, Blink Twice, in which Channing starred. On the press tour, Zoë was flaunting her engagement ring, there were talks of wedding plans, and then, BOOM, two months later, they broke up. Could this one be the most shocking of all?
8. KNEW IT: Halle Bailey & DDG (2022-2024)

There was a bit of cheating speculation surrounding these two, but as soon as DDG dropped that song about feeling “insecure” about Halle’s fame, I knew it wasn’t going to last for them. On the track, “Famous,” which was released around the time Halle was promoting The Little Mermaid with her co-star Jonah Hauer-King, DDG rapped: “Filmin’ a movie now you kissing dudes / You know I love you a lot / I don’t give a fuck if that shit for promo / I don’t wanna see this shit no more / Why is y’all holdin’ hands in the photo? You know I’m insecure, that’s a no-no.” They split the following year after welcoming a son together.
9. DIDN’T SEE IT COMING: Kelsea Ballerini & Chase Stokes (2023-2025)

Like Shaun and Nina, this one is pretty recent. On Sept. 14, a rep for Kelsea confirmed to People that she and Chase had broken up. The news was already sad enough, but what made the whole thing quite confusing was that it came just two days after Chase posted a gushing birthday tribute to Kelsea on Instagram. “although you keep saying you’re not excited for 32, id say I’m lookin forward to more of this,” he wrote in the caption. “happy birthday my love ❤️.” What the heck?
10. KNEW IT: Sofía Vergara & Joe Manganiello (2014-2023)

This was a textbook case of How To Perfectly Soft-Launch Your Divorce. They stopped attending events together, put their $18 million mansion on the market, and Sofía started posting IG pictures without her ring on. Joe was noticeably absent from Sofía’s 51st birthday celebrations in Capri, and a week later, the divorce was announced. Voila.
11. DIDN’T SEE IT COMING: Jennifer Lopez & Alex Rodriguez (2017-2021)

With their matching nicknames, J.Lo and A.Rod really seemed like a perfect pair. They moved in together, blended their families, got engaged, and gushed about each other to the world — but as we all know, things aren’t always as they appear. Just two months after A.Rod had been J.Lo’s biggest supporter at the Super Bowl Halftime Show in February 2020, they postponed their wedding. They said the cancelation was due to COVID complications, but, much to fans’ shock, they never made it down the aisle. I need to know what really happened?! Is there still a chance for these two?
12. KNEW IT: Kim Kardashian & Kanye West (2012-2021)

By virtue of being one of the world’s most famous reality stars, much of Kim’s personal life has played out very publicly. And, as we all know, Kanye has long been a very outspoken individual. So, when these two were navigating difficulties towards the end of their marriage, it soon became evident from the outside. In 2020, it was already speculated that the pair were mostly living apart and that Kanye’s Republican image was putting a strain on their marriage. By early 2021, Kim had filed for divorce.
13. DIDN’T SEE IT COMING: Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt (2005-2016)

Brangelina — despite being one of the world’s most famous couples — were very private when it came to the details of their married life, giving fans the impression that all was OK behind closed doors. So, when Angelina filed for divorce in September 2016, it was shocking for many reasons. The divorce filing came days after an alleged altercation on a private jet where Brad was accused of physically and verbally assaulting Angelina and their son, Maddox, who was 15 at the time. Brad was later cleared of any wrongdoing
14. KNEW IT: Ariana Grande & Dalton Gomez (2020-2023)
OK, Ariana’s Positions is one of my favorite albums ever. But even all those amazing love songs weren’t enough to convince me that these two were gonna go the distance. She was a world-famous pop star (about to get even more famous thanks to her casting in the Wicked movies), while he was a normie real estate agent. And history has shown that major fame-gap relationships don’t always have happy endings — particularly in scenarios where a woman is a lot more successful than her male partner. Sad, but (often) true!
15. DIDN’T SEE IT COMING: Tia Mowry & Cory Hardrict (2000-2022)

Even now, I’m still shocked that these two broke up! Just a few months before their divorce announcement in 2022, Tia had proudly celebrated their 14th wedding anniversary on social media, writing: “I’ve loved you for 22 years and I’ll love you for a million more.” Fortunately, the split seemed pretty amicable, and they appear to have maintained a close coparenting relationship ever since.
16. KNEW IT: Demi Moore & Ashton Kutcher (2003-2011)

Between all the chatter about their 15-year age gap and those messy cheating accusations, Demi and Ashton’s marriage wasn’t always smooth sailing. They announced their split in November 2011, just two months after Ashton was accused of cheating on Demi for the second time that year.
17. DIDN’T SEE IT COMING: Camila Morrone & Leonardo DiCaprio (2017-2022)

OK, this one might be controversial, but I actually thought they’d go the distance! In the 2010s, Leo was connected to a number of romantic interests, but none of the pairings seemed all that serious until Camila entered the picture in 2017. Over the years they were together, Leo and Camila seemed to get stronger and stronger — she even sat front row with him at the Oscars in 2020, which, when you consider how private he is, is a pretty big deal. So, when they broke up in 2022, I, for one, was shocked.
18. KNEW IT: Kim Kardashian & Kris Humphries (2010-2011)

Whenever Kris featured on any of Kim’s various reality shows, it never really felt like he fit in with the family. They say opposites attract, but not for these two. I don’t think any of us were surprised when the marriage broke down after just 72 days.
19. DIDN’T SEE IT COMING: Chris Appleton & Lukas Gage (2023)

If you’d forgotten about this romance, I wouldn’t blame you, because it was incredibly short-lived. For context, Chris is Kim K’s hairstylist, and he tied the knot with Lukas in April 2023, just two months after they first sparked dating rumors. Their Las Vegas nuptials were well documented on an episode of The Kardashians. But just FOUR days after the wedding episode aired on Nov. 9, 2023, it was reported that Chris had filed for divorce. I guess you could say it wasn’t all that surprising that they didn’t go the distance, but the way the breakup played out had me blindsided, that’s for sure.
20. KNEW IT: Jennifer Lopez & Ben Affleck (2021-2024)

Welcome back, Ben. Welcome back, J.Lo. It’s time to complete this list with maybe the most predictable celebrity breakup of the 2020s so far. I adored their comeback, but let’s be honest, there was a reason they broke up the first time. After Ben and J.Lo got back together in 2021, it became increasingly clear over the years that their differing approaches to fame made them pretty incompatible. And since they split for good in 2024, Ben has basically confirmed as much. “My temperament is to be a little bit more reserved and private than hers,” he told GQ this year. “As happens in relationships, you don’t always have the same attitude towards these things.” They’re definitely better as friends.
