The next James Bond film already has a director and a clear plan, but many pieces of the franchise’s complex puzzle still need to fall into place. Rumors suggest Sydney Sweeney could be the next Bond girl — though the American actress continues to play coy.
“I can’t. [Seven-second pause.] I don’t know. [Ten-second pause.] To be honest, I don’t know all the Bond rumors, but I’ve always been a huge fan of the franchise, and I’m excited and curious to see what they do with it,” she said.
Her comments come from an interview with Variety, where she was asked directly about the speculation. She’s clearly keeping her cards close to her chest — but would she take the role if offered? “It depends on the script. I think I’d have more fun if I were James Bond,” she joked.
If confirmed, Sweeney would follow in the footsteps of actresses like Léa Seydoux and Ana de Armas, both of whom played key roles in the saga’s last installment, No Time to Die (2021).
As for the next 007, the possibility of a female Bond has been firmly ruled out. The franchise’s new stewards, Amazon MGM, have made it clear what they’re looking for: a male lead, in his thirties, with a distinctly British profile.
That profile is being defined by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, who has been tapped by Denis Villeneuve to write the screenplay. The film’s release is still a long way off, with most predictions pointing to 2028. Between now and then, the production will go through its full cycle — from development to location shooting.
