THE Millen, the first Marriott International Autograph Collection hotel in Penang, has officially opened its doors to the world.

It blends colonial heritage with modern sophistication, offering travellers “a different Penang”.

Located at Millionaire’s Row, each room in the 146-room hotel offers panoramic views of the Andaman Sea or George Town cityscape.

Bespoke touches in rooms that start from 56m² include motion-sensor lighting, a Nespresso Vertuo machine, Whittard of Chelsea teas, organic nutmeg-infused amenities and custom designed sofa.

Suites range from the Colonial and Straits Lofts to the Sterling and Silver Suites, with the latter ranking among Penang’s largest two-bedroom Presidential Suites at 156m².

Beyond guestrooms, The Millen features premier event facilities including the Upperton Hall Grand Ballroom with one of the island’s longest LED screens measuring 31m x 2m, intimate boardrooms and versatile venues for weddings, conferences and milestone celebrations.

Dining at The Millen is equally distinctive with Good Society, an elegant tea lounge by day and bar by night; Lili, presenting modern Malaysian cuisine crafted with responsibly sourced ingredients; and Blacklinen, a speciality grill concept for the discerning palate.

Guests seeking relaxation can retreat to Nut&Meg Spa, inspired by Penang’s spice heritage, or enjoy the 24-hour fitness centre and glass-walled infinity pool.

Every corner of the hotel has curated works by local and international artists transforming The Millen into a living gallery.

At the launch, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said: “It is a great honour to celebrate the grand opening of The Millen.

“This remarkable property blends colonial heritage, sophistication and a fresh vision for our state.”

Attending the event were HNG Capital Sdn Bhd group executive chairman Tan Sri H’ng Bok San, group chief financial officer Datin Seri Jessica H’ng, executive director Jolyn Tan, Penang tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai, Penang Speaker Datuk Seri Law Choo Kiang, Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng and The Millen general manager Catherine Townsend.

HNG Capital chief executive officer Datuk Sean H’ng Chun Hsiang said: “The opening of The Millen reflects our unwavering commitment to redefining luxury hospitality while honouring Penang’s heritage.

“It supports local artisans, talents and businesses, ensuring that tourism continues to create value for the community.”

HNG Capital acquired the hotel building in 2016.

For many years, it was known as The Northam All Suite Hotel, once one of Penang’s finest luxury hotels.

In 2020, the group embarked on a major renovation and rebranding exercise.

After five years of careful planning and resilience, The Millen quietly welcomed its first guests in February.

Since then, The Millen has received the Best Luxury Hotel Award in The Gold List 2025 by IM First Class.

“As the world embraces travel again, I have no doubt that The Millen will inspire guests from near and far to discover Penang in new and meaningful ways,” said Marriott International market vice-president (Malaysia) George Varughese.

The Millen is part of a curated portfolio of independent hotels within the Marriott Bonvoy programme.
