Julia Roberts Reveals Her Son Rewore Her Iconic 1990 Golden Globes Armani Suit

The legacy of Julia Roberts‘ 1990 Golden Globes suit lives on.

It was 35 years ago when the actress, 57, made a major style statement at the awards show in a menswear Armani suit. Turns out, the designer ensemble never left Roberts’ possession.

In a Sept. 30 Extra interview with the After the Hunt cast, Roberts revealed that she still has the outfit in her closet over three decades later. Better yet, she said that her 18-year-old son Henry, whom she shares with husband Danny Moder, “had it on the other day.”

Seated next to Roberts was her costar Ayo Edebiri, who couldn’t believe that the iconic look was still around. “I’m going to bring it to work tomorrow, and I want you to put it on,” she told Edebiri, who replied, “Stop! Are you kidding me?”

The Bear star’s excitement doesn’t come as a surprise. She did, after all, channel the memorable look when she had her own turn at the Golden Globes this past January.

Styled by Danielle Goldberg, Edebiri wore a custom Loewe gray suit accessorized with a gold feather-like tie. “I love to wear a dress, but I love to wear a suit. And I love those ’90s Armani suits. They’re just, like, the best,” Edebiri, 29, told Extra.

Roberts recounted the story of purchasing the suit like it was yesterday, sharing with the outlet how she stumbled upon it on her own. “I went into the Armani store and, as I recall, downstairs is women’s clothing. And I went upstairs to the men’s department. I remember I put the suit on and I loved it,” she remembered, then retelling her reaction to getting it tailored on the spot. “I was very taken with myself.”

In her 2024 Life in Looks video for Vogue, Roberts said wearing the suit turned out to be one of her “all-time favorite outfits.”

“I did my hair, my girlfriend did my makeup… I don’t even know that people wore really fancy gowns to the Golden Globes then the way they do now, but I thought that I was very extra in this outfit. I could not have known that it was going to become this, like, statement outfit. I just thought I looked fabulous…”

In 1990, Roberts won Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for Steel Magnolias, while this year, Edebiri was nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for The Bear.

It’s not just castmates and family members who’ve been clothes-swapping with Roberts. On Sept. 1, fellow actress Amanda Seyfried stepped out at the Venice International Film Festival in a full Versace suit borrowed from Roberts, who wore it first at the After the Hunt photocall the day before. The two share stylist Elizabeth Stewart.

“It’s nice to be able to not only honor my friends in a fun way … we’re all kind of fashion-y, which is nice,” Roberts told Entertainment Tonight.
