Chris Fischer made a brutal joke about divorcing his wife, Amy Schumer, years before their marriage woes made headlines.
In honor of the comedian’s 40th birthday in June 2021, Fischer presented her with a birthday cake that read, “I’m leaving you. This was the only way I could think to do it.”
At the time, Schumer, now 44, posted an Instagram video that showed her receiving the questionable chocolate dessert from the chef while her loved ones serenaded her with a rendition of “Happy Birthday.”
As Fischer set the cake down in front of Schumer — whose son, Gene, now 6, was sitting on her lap — she went from smiling to serious, though it’s unclear whether she was in on the joke.
Last month, Schumer — who has been on a body-transformation journey — scrubbed all of her pre-weight-loss posts from her Instagram page, insisting that she “deleted [her] old pics for no reason!”
She then uploaded a carousel featuring modeling shots that did not include her wedding ring.
“Your Instagram is not your identity it’s a curation of what you want the world to see and I feel great strong and beautiful and it’s been fun sharing that,” she later explained.
However, the Daily Mail later reported that there was more to the story.
“Amy is 100% getting divorced. She got skinny. She is over it,” a source told the outlet, noting that she “deleted Chris from Instagram, then deleted everything else. She’s going to file soon, but it’s over. Done.”
The source also claimed that Fischer, 45, is “mostly out of the house at this point. They’ve listed two homes now — in Brooklyn and New Orleans.”
Another source pointed out that the actress “has not taken him on a red carpet for months.”
“When a woman loses weight, her personality changes,” the second source argued. “Amy has changed since losing weight; she is much lighter in her spirit, more easygoing. I think she wants more out of life.”
That source and a third also claimed that Fischer’s autism “has also become a minor issue for their relationship.”
In response to the report, Schumer took to her Instagram Story to insist in part, “Whatever ends up happening with me and Chris has nothing to do with weight loss or autism.”
Then on Tuesday, an insider close to the pair told Page Six that there is “zero chance of salvaging the marriage.”
The insider elaborated, “They’ve been having issues for ages. … All they are doing now is working out a conscious uncoupling plan.” (The divorce term was popularized by Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin in their 2014 split statement.)
Schumer and Fischer — who wed in February 2018 — spent the entire summer apart in 2023, as she opted to vacation in Europe with fellow comedian Jerry Seinfeld and his wife, Jessica Seinfeld.
By the end of that summer, we’re told that Schumer and Fischer agreed to work on their relationship; however, the duo has since shifted their focus to their child.
“Amy also wants to have the most amicable co-parenting relationship possible with Chris, so they are sorting out what will work best,” our insider said.
Reps for Schumer and Fischer did not immediately respond to Page Six’s requests for comment.
