Celebrity Infinity is back in business! After ending one cruise early and cancelling another due to technical problems, the Celebrity Cruises’ ship is ready to resume service.
Cruise Hive has obtained an email that was sent to the up to 2,170 guests booked on the upcoming February 27, 2026, departure confirming that their sailing would be able to go ahead as planned.
“We are looking forward to welcoming you aboard Celebrity Infinity for your upcoming February 27, 2026 sailing,” the letter begins.
“Our team is preparing an unforgettable vacation experience for you, and we’re happy to confirm that your sailing will proceed as planned,” Celebrity Cruises wrote.
The first sailing back, which will be based out of Piraeus-Athens, Greece, will be a 10-night voyage to destinations throughout Greece and Turkey. The itinerary calls for stops in Nafplio, Heraklion, Rhodes Island, Kavala, Thessaloniki, and Kusadasi.
What Went Wrong?
At approximately 3 a.m. on February 15, the 90,940-gross ton vessel suddenly lost power while the ship was approaching Athens.
As Cruise Hive learned from guests who were onboard at the time, there was no electricity, no air conditioning, no Wi-Fi, and no working toilets – which was starting to sound reminiscent of Carnival Triumph’s infamous “poop cruise” in 2013.
Thankfully, the Celebrity ship was already along the Greek coast and tug boats were able to bring her into port quickly.
Guests disembarked one day early and were reimbursed for last-minute hotel rooms, lunch on land, and transportation. Meanwhile, the subsequent February 16 sailing was cancelled to allow for repairs to be completed.
Celebrity Cruises never confirmed the cause of the technical issues, but a translated statement from the Hellenic Coast Guard suggested a malfunction in the electrical distribution panels was to blame.
“The Port Authorities of Piraeus and Keratsini were informed by the Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Center (EKSED) of the Hellenic Coast Guard-El.AKT, of the loss of control of a cruise ship… due to a malfunction in the electrical distribution panels,” the statement read.
Electrical distribution panels act as the central hubs for safely managing, monitoring, and distributing electrical power throughout the ship, so losing these is a big deal.
Should Future Guests be Worried?
Rest assured that safety is the top priority for Celebrity Cruises, and the Royal Caribbean-owned brand would not allow Celebrity Infinity to resume cruising if it was not safe to do so.
However, some are nervous considering the 2001-launched ship has had quite a few issues with power loss and propulsion over the years.
The most recent incident occurred less than a year ago in July 2025, in which a small fire resulted in a blackout. Celebrity Infinity was stuck in Kusadasi, Turkey, for several days as repairs were made.
Issues with propulsion and power have also been reported for the Millennium-class ship in 2025, 2018, 2012, 2010, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, and 2001.
And while Celebrity Infinity is an older ship at 25-years-old, Celebrity Cruises does its best to maintain the vessel. The ship was in dry dock as recently as January 2-11, 2026, for routine technical work, maintenance, and certification work.
