George Lucas, the legendary filmmaker behind Star Wars, revolutionized Hollywood with his imaginative storytelling, pioneering special effects, and bold approach to franchise filmmaking. From his early days as a student at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts to the global phenomenon of Indiana Jones, Lucas has consistently pushed the boundaries of cinema, earning him an Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2005, among numerous other accolades.

After selling his Lucasfilm production company to Disney for $4.1 billion in 2012, Lucas largely stepped away from filmmaking, redirecting his energy toward philanthropy, education, and art. His fortune, estimated at $5.5 billion, has enabled him to pursue these passions on a global scale. A committed supporter of education, Lucas signed the Giving Pledge in 2010, promising to donate the majority of his wealth to charitable causes. His George Lucas Family Foundation, valued at over $1 billion, has become a major force in improving educational opportunities, particularly in science, technology, and engineering.

Lucas is also a devoted collector and patron of the arts. Together with his wife, Mellody Hobson, he founded the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles, reportedly set to open in September 2026. The 100,000-square-foot museum will showcase works from his personal collection, including illustrations, paintings, comics, and film memorabilia, offering the public a rare glimpse into the creative worlds that inspired a generation of storytelling.

Beyond his professional and philanthropic pursuits, Lucas’s interests extend to a thoughtfully curated portfolio of homes spanning the U.S. and abroad. His holdings range from the sprawling Skywalker Ranch in Marin County to side-by-side retreats in Carpinteria, multi-parcel compounds in San Anselmo, a historic Bel Air mansion, a record-setting Chicago penthouse, a winery in France, and a trophy London residence. Below, we’re taking a look at all the places Lucas calls home.

    • Skywalker Ranch

Nestled in the hills of Marin County, north of San Francisco, Lucas’s 4,700-acre Skywalker Ranch is a private creative retreat and the headquarters of Skywalker Sound and the George Lucas Educational Foundation. Although Lucas does not reside on the property, he began acquiring land there in 1978, shortly after the release of Star Wars, and has reportedly invested more than $100 million developing the ranch. Coincidentally, the property sits in the aptly named Lucas Valley, and the filmmaker christened the estate Skywalker Ranch, after his iconic movie protagonist.

The compound’s centerpiece is a 50,000-square-foot Victorian-style house, designed to resemble an 1869 cattle rancher’s home. The estate includes 14 additional buildings, featuring guest accommodations, multiple screening rooms, a 35-seat theater, a state-of-the-art fitness center with racquetball courts, swimming pool, and wellness facilities, as well as Skywalker Sound’s postproduction studios, which have hosted directors like James Cameron, Clint Eastwood, and Philip Kaufman. The property also contains Lake Ewok, a working vineyard, a seven-acre olive grove, and an organic garden, along with its own fire station and underground parking.

Beyond its architecture and technical facilities, Skywalker Ranch has been the site of personal milestones and high-profile gatherings. In January 2013, Lucas became engaged to Hobson, president of Ariel Investments, and the couple married later that June at the ranch. More recently, in May 2024, Lucas celebrated his 80th birthday on the grounds with a star-studded party that included Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Samuel L. Jackson, Oprah Winfrey, and Steven Spielberg, to name a few.

    • Carpinteria

Lucas first purchased a contemporary four-bedroom beach house in Carpinteria in 2010 for $19.5 million, creating a private retreat on 1.7 acres with a two-bedroom guesthouse, yoga and exercise spaces, and a poolside courtyard. In 2019, he expanded the compound with the off-market acquisition of the neighboring $28 million property, a Cape Cod–style home complete with a barn, guesthouse, and even a treehouse. Together, the side-by-side properties form a nearly four-acre oceanfront enclave, offering sweeping views, expansive outdoor spaces, and an uncommon level of seclusion on the Southern California coast.

    • San Anselmo

Lucas’s sprawling compound in San Anselmo is centered around a 15,159-square-foot main house, but also features many additional residences and plots. Highlights include a greenhouse or folly on an adjacent parcel, a pool with a guesthouse, a large parcel with a tennis court, and several vacant lots. Beyond his personal use, Lucas has contributed to the community. In 2012, he donated land in San Anselmo to the Chamber of Commerce, which became the 8,700-square-foot Imagination Park, featuring statues of Yoda and Indiana Jones as a nod to his cinematic legacy.

    • Los Angeles

In 2017, Lucas, through Skywalker Properties, acquired an 8,932-square-foot Spanish Revival mansion in Bel Air, known as Mi Patria (“my country”), for $33.9 million from billionaire businessman and former presidential candidate Ross Perot. Built in 1929, the gated estate features nine bedrooms, eight bathrooms, a guesthouse, a pool, a garage, and lush gardens. Classic old-world details, such as Moorish tiled fountains, an arch-lined loggia, wood-beamed ceilings, and a sunny central patio, are complemented by more modern elements, like a screening room, gym, meditation space, and private putting green.

    • Chicago

In 2015, Lucas and his wife added a Chicago penthouse to their portfolio, acquiring the 65th-floor unit at Park Tower for $18.75 million—setting a new record for the city’s most expensive home sale at the time. The 7,900-square-foot residence occupies the top tier of one of Chicago’s most iconic skyscrapers along the Magnificent Mile. The sale eclipsed previous high-profile transactions in the building, including billionaire hedge funder Ken Griffin’s 2012 purchase of the unit directly above for $15 million, as well as Sanjay Shah’s $17 million Trump Tower condo purchase, which had temporarily held the record for Chicago’s priciest residential sale.

    • Château Margüi

The Academy Award-nominated filmmaker added a winery in southern France to his global property portfolio with the purchase of Château Margüi, a 253-acre historic estate in Provence’s Var region. Acquired in 2017 for $14 million, the property includes 33 acres of vineyards, orchards, olive groves, a vegetable garden, a restored 18th-century chateau, a Roman chapel, multiple houses, and “technical” buildings, all renovated in the past two decades.

Part of Lucas’s Skywalker Vineyards collection, which also produces wine in California and Italy, the estate reflects the couple’s passion for winemaking. The main house has been transformed into a refined retreat, with a library and vintage movie posters that nod to the pair’s Hollywood roots. Today, Château Margüi operates as a working winery and offers guests the opportunity to book a private Provençal getaway.

The estate is part of a coveted enclave of celebrity-owned properties, with neighbors including Brad Pitt—whose Château de Miraval, about five miles away, became famous as the site of his 2014 wedding to Angelina Jolie and home to the Miraval wine brand—and George Clooney, who purchased a nearby château with his wife Amal in 2021.

    • London

According to The Times of London, Lucas snapped up a St. John’s Wood mansion in an off-market deal in September 2025 for approximately £40 million ($52.3 million), one of the U.K.’s most expensive residential transactions. Few details have been made public about the exact location or features of the property, which was reportedly formerly owned by a senior city lawyer. The purchase follows a string of high-profile acquisitions by American buyers, including Eric Schmidt’s nearly £42 million Holland Park mansion. In 2024, fashion designer Tom Ford also made a trophy purchase in Chelsea for roughly £80 million ($104 million).
