Expedition travel, built around small-group journeys to remote destinations with expert-led exploration, sits at the intersection of several forces reshaping luxury demand. Affluent consumers are prioritizing experiences, while constant connectivity is driving demand for travel that offers a genuine break from screens and everyday routines.

At Skift Global Forum 2026, Natalya Leahy, CEO of Lindblad Expeditions Holdings, argued that the category can reach a much larger audience without giving up the intimacy and expert-led spontaneity that set it apart.

The Expedition Mindset Is the Future of Luxury Travel

A Category With Room to Grow

Lindblad helped establish the expedition category nearly six decades ago, when Lars-Eric Lindblad led 53 travelers on a pioneering nonscientific journey to Antarctica in 1966. What once felt, in Leahy’s words, like taking civilians to the moon has evolved into a more established segment of the luxury travel market. Expedition travel’s purpose still runs deeper than simply giving access.

“By taking people through these amazing, awe-inspiring places in the world, we create a fundamental shift in their relationship with the planet,” she said.

The expedition product also aligns with the experience economy. Travelers are skipping conventional itineraries in favor of places that feel rare, authentic, and emotionally resonant. “People are prioritizing experiences,” Leahy said. They increasingly want travel that is “much more authentic than check-the-box” tourism and that creates a deeper connection with a destination.

Technology overload may further strengthen that appeal. “In a world of AI, experiential travel probably stands to benefit the most,” Leahy said. As technology becomes more pervasive, she expects people to seek places where they can disconnect fully and reconnect with themselves.

Even with those tailwinds, expedition travel is still a relatively small market. Leahy said fewer than one million travelers participate in the global expedition market, while roughly 22 million U.S. households fit the demographic and economic profile for expedition travel. The category also represents less than 1% of the cruise market, leaving substantial room for growth.

The opportunity lies in translating rarity into a credible experience built on knowledge, trust, and human connection. Selling more remote destinations alone won’t get there.

Luxury Is Defined by Meaning, Personalization and Authenticity

Leahy challenged the idea that amenities are the main measure of luxury. Lindblad’s consumer research found that destination, expedition activities, and the company’s reputation were the three strongest drivers of purchase intent. Culinary quality, price, and suite amenities did not make the top three. Those elements still matter, but because guests expect them, they don’t serve as differentiators.

“Luxury is not defined by amenities anymore. Luxury is defined by a unique experience,” Leahy said. A well-appointed suite and strong culinary program are “the price of entry.” The differentiator is personalization and authenticity, and destinations interpreted by experts who make the experiences more meaningful.

When the Unscripted Becomes the Product

Leahy illustrated that distinction with a story from her own Lindblad voyage in Antarctica. After several days aboard what she described as the southernmost passenger vessel in the world, she joined a cross-country ski toward a glacier. With emperor penguins all around, the group’s expedition leader stopped and invited everyone to spend a few minutes in silence. When the travelers turned around, the ship was no longer visible. “I think everyone had more than just a memory,” Leahy said. “It was a really spiritual experience.”

For Leahy, what made the moment powerful was that it had not been scripted. It depended on an experienced leader recognizing an opportunity and having the authority to reshape the outing in real time. Leahy said it demonstrated “incredible expertise” and a team empowered to create spontaneous moments on the spot. That operating knowledge, combined with small groups and Lindblad’s National Geographic partnership, is central to the company’s differentiation.

    Scaling Without Diluting the Experience

The challenge is welcoming more travelers without making the product feel ordinary. Leahy pointed to Lindblad’s record net promoter score in the same year it welcomed its highest number of guests as evidence that scale and quality don’t have to move in opposite directions.

“You can grow and still deliver a very exceptional experience,” she said. Doing so requires focus, passionate and empowered teams, and a clear priority: “Delivering exceptional guest experience always will be a North Star.” That principle must extend across the entire guest journey. Growth becomes sustainable when every team understands that operational efficiency supports the guest experience rather than replacing it.

    Expanding the Definition of Expedition

Lindblad is also expanding through other land-based brands and experiences. White Desert Antarctica brings guests by air from Cape Town to luxury camps in the continent’s interior, with itineraries that can include the South Pole. Additionally, Lindblad is developing Echo Charlie, an aviation-led concept that takes the expedition model off the ship and to hard-to-reach destinations by air.

“We’re going to take people on airplanes to these out-of-this-world experiences in hidden places in the world where you can’t get otherwise,” Leahy said, describing an approach meant to open places conventional itineraries can’t easily reach.

    Keeping Rarity at the Center

Leahy’s argument was ultimately a case for disciplined expansion. Expedition travel has the demographic and cultural tailwinds to become a larger part of luxury travel, but its value depends on preserving what mass tourism can’t easily reproduce: trusted expertise, intimate groups, flexible operations, and meaningful encounters with extraordinary places. For Lindblad, growth means opening those experiences to more travelers without making them feel any less rare.
