Michael Schumacher’s $18M Ferrari misses out on top spot in most expensive celebrity-owned car sales

Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton are both included in the list of the 10 most expensive celebrity-owned car sales, but neither gets the top spot.

It is fitting for two of the greatest Formula 1 legends of all time to be on any list involving expensive cars being sold. However, there is a lot more to it than just that.

Lewis Hamilton recently sold his entire private road car collection for $18 million. The F1 legend had already begun selling in 2021, when he sold his bespoke 2014 Pagani Zonda 760 LH, reportedly for over $10 million.

That mind-boggling number doesn’t even crack the top five for most expensive celebrity car sales. In fact, Michael Schumacher’s car is ahead of his in this aspect, and the full list has some interesting names on it.

A recent study by Rerev has provided a complete list of the top 10 most expensive celebrity-owned vehicles ever sold.

The research looked at publicly documented auction records to find which celebrity-owned cars have fetched the highest prices ever. It tracked the final sale price for each car, where it sold, and the year the transaction took place.

The study also noted each vehicle’s specs and the celebrity’s connection to it. Cars were then ranked by sale price in US dollars, with euro and pound figures converted at the rate reported by the source at the time of each sale.

• James Coburn (2008), 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder – Sold for $10,894,900.

• Lewis Hamilton (2021), 2014 Pagani Zonda 760 LH – Sold for $10,800,000.

• Steve McQueen (2014), 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 – Sold for $10,175,000.

• Jerry Seinfeld (2016), 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder – Sold for $5,335,000.

The value of the cars clearly depends not just on the vehicle itself, but how unique it is, and how famous the celebrity who owned it was. Gary Cooper’s 1935 Duesenberg SSJ, for example, was one of only two ever made.

Seeing Schumacher’s 2001 championship-winning Ferrari here is truly something, too. This list is as much a look into the history books as it is anything else.
