Industry veteran Stewart Williams has joined Riverside Luxury Cruises as country manager for Australia and New Zealand, bringing decades of cruise and travel industry experience to the luxury river cruise line’s expansion plans in the region.

Williams, who previously served as managing director of Globus family of brands and most recently spent six years building distribution for Celestyal Cruises across Australia and New Zealand, said the opportunity to help establish Riverside in the local market was one he couldn’t ignore.

After concluding his work with Celestyal, Williams was approached by Riverside’s leadership team to help drive the brand’s growth across Australasia.

“I really love the travel industry and I really love river cruising in specific,” Williams said. “When I researched the brand, I thought, ‘this is a very unique product.’ The opportunity to help build the brand in Australia was very exciting.”

    Riverside takes Australasia

Founded in 2023, Riverside Luxury Cruises has spent its first years establishing itself in North America and Europe.

Now, the line is turning its attention to Australasia, with Williams tasked with growing awareness, strengthening distribution and developing trade partnerships across the region.

His immediate focus will be on deepening relationships with luxury travel networks including luxury travel advisors who are looking at an upscale product to introduce to their client base.

For Williams, travel advisors will remain central to the brand’s growth strategy. “It’s 100 per cent imperative,” he said.

“The distribution model Riverside wants is through the travel advisor community. It’s about educating advisors and working closely with those who specialise in luxury travel.”

He said he had been impressed by the passion and professionalism of Australia’s luxury travel sector since joining the brand, particularly the appetite to learn about the brands three exclusive luxury river ships.

As competition in the river cruise sector continues to grow, Williams believes Riverside occupies a distinct position at the ultra-luxury end of the market.

    The pinnacle of river cruising

Riverside operates three luxury all-suite river ships across Europe’s most popular waterways.

Riverside Mozart sails the Danube, Riverside Debussy cruises the Rhine, and Riverside Ravel explores France’s Rhône and Saône rivers.

With spacious suites, a focus on culinary excellence and a high crew-to-guest ratio, the fleet is designed to deliver a boutique hotel experience on the water.

Comparing the brand to the luxury tiers found in ocean cruising, he describes Riverside as “the pinnacle” of river cruising, combining intimate guest numbers, personalised service and a boutique hotel atmosphere.

“It’s like staying in a luxury hotel that just happens to be floating along some of Europe’s most incredible rivers,” he said.

“The luxury is refined, but it’s also relaxed and comfortable. I think that’s exactly what the Australian and New Zealand market is looking for.”

Charlie Hewitt-Davies, Riverside Luxury Cruises’ director for the UK, Australia and New Zealand, added that the brand’s key differentiator is its boutique hotel-style approach to river cruising.

She said Riverside places a strong emphasis on exceptional dining, with one of the highest per-guest food spends in the river cruise sector.

“Service and food are at the heart of our DNA,” Hewitt-Davies said, adding that the quality of the onboard culinary experience is consistently highlighted as a standout feature by guests.

With strong trade relationships already in place and a growing appetite for luxury travel among Australian consumers, Williams and Hewitt believe the timing is right for Riverside to make its mark locally.
