For today’s eco-conscious travellers, here are four sustainable stays for your next trip.

    AARU Collective

Luxury travelers in 2025 aren’t just talking about sustainability; they’re prioritizing it, with over two-thirds now willing to pay more for eco-conscious experiences.

And they’re not limiting responsible travel to their carbon footprint anymore, either.

For the first time, over half now consider how their trip will impact local communities, as well as the environment. Nearly three-quarters of travelers want the money they spend to go back to the local community, while two-thirds want to leave places better than before they arrived.

“Sustainable practices have long existed, but the pandemic accelerated the shift. With travel and options limited, people embraced supporting local businesses, discovering their true value, while carbon emissions fell. These habits have stayed, making sustainability increasingly important to travellers. Though the pandemic was a tragedy, it revealed a silver lining we can carry forward,” says Kelly Forbes, founder of sustainable hotel collection, A’ARU Collective.

However, while traveller intentions are improving, greenwashing is becoming more pervasive than ever, Kelly warns.

“It’s a double-edged sword. As demand for sustainability grows, hotels with surface-level policies are broadcasting their efforts louder than ever, making it increasingly difficult to separate those driving genuine change from those just ticking boxes. And hotels with bigger marketing budgets can amplify their claims the most, but they’re often the ones doing the least.

“No hotel wants to admit it’s not sustainable, which is exactly where tokenism and greenwashing come into play.”

Each hotel in A’ARU Collective’s portfolio is vetted against the UN Sustainable Development Goals, for example, and must provide quantifiable impact metrics to prove they deliver tangible results, rather than aspirational claims. Each hotel has a demonstrable commitment to protecting the environment and supporting local communities, while also delivering a luxury stay.

For today’s eco-conscious travellers, here are four sustainable stays for your next trip.

Maldives Resort with Indian Ocean’s Largest Coral Restoration

Soneva Fushi is a luxury resort located within the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, on one of the Maldives’ largest unspoiled islands. Carbon neutral since 2012, the resort is powered by a solar energy system and recycles 90% of waste.

Soneva Fushi has also created the Maldives’ first hot glass studio, where yesterday’s wine bottles from the resort’s 14 dining venues are transformed into valuable artworks. Guests can watch world-renowned artists work with molten glass, then try their hand at creating their own masterpiece from recycled bottles under the guidance of experienced specialists.

Guests can also visit the resort’s science centre, home to the Indian Ocean’s largest coral restoration facility, which is dedicated to bringing damaged reefs back to life and creating homes for fish and other marine life while protecting the shoreline.

Here, marine biologists care for thousands of tiny juvenile corals, gradually nurturing them until they are strong enough to be replanted on the reef. So far, 63,000 coral colonies have been restored, and the centre aims to grow 150,000 new corals each year.

Guests can then snorkel above the reefs they’re helping to restore, spotting fish and marine life that have returned thanks to the revived coral colonies. Soneva Fushi has 63 villas crafted from timber and thatch, which lie hidden among lush jungle or perched above crystal-clear waters with seamless indoor-outdoor living.

In the evening, guests can go on a 1-hour 15-minute zipline adventure through the jungle canopy to reach the resort’s overwater restaurant. Then, enjoy some expert-led stargazing at the observatory with the resident astronomer, or take it one step further by camping under the stars on a private sandbank in a Bedouin-style tent.

Malaysian Resort Restoring one of the World’s Oldest Rainforests

Deep in one of the world’s oldest rainforests, The Datai Langkawi achieved its first zero-waste-to-landfill milestone in December 2021. Today, 98% of solid waste undergoes on-site processing, diverting over 50 tons from landfills annually.

Since 2020, the resort has restored fragmented forests and expanded its Native Tree Nursery to accommodate 3,015 trees from 19 species. And guests aren’t just there to admire the ancient rainforest, but actively partake in its restoration. Visitors have planted over 2,730 trees already, working alongside the staff.

At Datai Bay, guests can also go snorkelling and get an up-close look at the five artificial coral reefs planted by the resort’s resident marine biologists, where they can encounter an exciting array of marine life now thriving in the pristine waters.

Visitors can also see the results of the resort’s turtle conservation work first-hand. Depending on the time of year, guests may even be able to watch the tiny hatchlings taking their first steps, waddling their way into the water.

The Datai Langkawi has also created an on-site glass water bottling plant to eliminate plastic water bottles throughout the property.

The five-star beach resort lies tucked away on a breathtaking 1.5 km-long white-sand beach, where guests can watch coral being planted during their morning snorkel. In the plush suites and villas, guests wake to the sounds of the ancient rainforest outside their villa, and are treated to their own hidden private pools and dedicated butler service. Meals are served at the four on-site restaurants, with many ingredients sourced from the waters and forests surrounding the property.

Watch Women Leading the Way at a Boutique Moroccan Hotel

La Sultana Oualidia sits on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, overlooking a tidal lagoon within a protected natural reserve. The boutique hotel has achieved 100% sustainable water usage by creating an innovative underground management system. It cleans and recycles water, using processes from filtration to eucalyptus-powered evaporation, to water the gardens.

They also have a flourishing organic garden that produces 4,637 kilograms of fruit, vegetables and herbs every year, including carrots, pumpkins, leeks and sweet peppers, depending on the season. Guests can sample the fresh produce during farm-to-table lunches by the vegetable patch.

La Sultana is dedicated to providing equal opportunity to its workforce, with nearly half of senior management roles held by women. For every tonne of CO2 the hotel produces, it donates 350 Moroccan Dirham to fund everything from local charities to eco-friendly projects. When Morocco’s earthquake hit in 2023, the hotel doubled its planned commitment to support regenerative efforts.

With just 28 rooms or suites, La Sultana promises an intimate stay. Each is complete with private terraces and seawater jacuzzis overlooking the hypnotic lagoon where tides set the rhythm of daily life. After an Argan oil massage at the spa, guests might sip Moroccan mint tea from their private jacuzzi while watching flamingos and grey herons during migration season.

The concierge team can arrange boat trips to the oyster beds to taste fresh oysters with Moroccan white wine at sunset, private picnics on secluded beaches reached by a fishing boat, and bird watching safaris by kayak through the lagoon’s protected ecosystem.

Remote Portuguese Farmhouse Supporting Young People with Disabilities

Tucked away among olive trees and cork fields in remote Portugal, where only 4% of the land is developed, lies Craveiral Farmhouse. The nature-focused accommodation sits upon a 9-hectare estate by the Atlantic coast and is surrounded by ancient ecosystems.

The estate grows 70% of its organic ingredients on-site and treats wastewater to irrigate the landscape, while rainwater from the roof waters the gardens. Guests can stroll by the vegetable patches, where carrots, leeks, and sweet peppers grow in organic soil, ready to be picked for the evening’s menu.

Craveiral Farmhouse partners with the VilacomVida Association to create employment opportunities for young people with Down syndrome, autism, and other developmental disabilities. At the hotel’s onsite pizzeria, they are trained in pizza-making.

The property’s 30 solar panels power each cottage’s LED lighting, while the all-electric kitchen and transport fleet run without a drop of fossil fuel. Even the sauna operates without electricity, using only wood for heat while doubling as a smokery for locally sourced meats.

Along with enjoying all of the property’s facilities, including the hammam, yoga classes, open-air cinema screenings, and cooking classes, guests can also explore the nearby biking and hiking trails. The legendary Vincentian Route winds along Southwest Portugal’s wild coastline, offering clifftop hikes with views of sandy bays and white storks nesting on sea stacks.
